Washington Voicing concern over the release of A Q Khan from the house arrest, the Obama Administration has said it wants "assurances" from Pakistan that its disgraced scientist is not involved in any nuclear proliferation activities.

A Pakistani court declared that 72-year-old Khan a "free citizen" five years after he was put under house arrest, raising serious concerns in the US about the possible revival of nuclear proliferation activities by him. In January, the US had slapped ban on Khan and his nuclear proliferation network.

"The President (Barack Obama) and this government want assurances that Dr Khan is not involved or engaged in any of the activity that resulted in his house arrest earlier," White House spokesperson, Robert Gibbs, told reporters on Friday.

However, he said the US government has not received any official word from Pakistan on Khan's release.

"Obviously this President has made clear many times the great concern that he has about nuclear proliferation." US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton too expressed concern over the release of Khan from house arrest yesterday.

"I am very much concerned," she told reporters in response to a question during a joint media availability with the Philippine President, Macapagal-Arroyo, at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of State Department.

"We'll have more to say about that," Clinton said in her brief response when a reporter sought her reaction on the release of Khan.

Earlier in the day, the State Department made it clear it is not pleased with the latest developments in Islamabad. The US believes that Khan continues to be a significant "proliferation risk" and his release from house arrest would be "unfortunate", its spokesperson, Gordon Duguid, said.

"On the general principle of A Q Khan and his status, let me say that in our view it would be unfortunate" if the court has released him, Duguid said in response to a question.

"We believe A Q Khan remains a serious proliferation risk. The proliferation support that Khan and his associates provided to Iran and North Korea has had a harmful impact on the international security, and will for years to come."

Duguid said Pakistan is well aware of the US position in this regard and Washington is trying to confirm the statement made by Khan's lawyer about his release from house arrest.

"If he is released, we think it would be extremely regrettable. This man remains a serious proliferation risk," he said.

"The United States and its international partners have done a good job in tracking down this network. That should have no effect or influence on whether or not Khan is let out of his current status of detention," Duguid said.

Concerned US wants Pak assurance over Khan's release by Ratan Gupta on 07 Feb 2009

I don't understand how our's and world's security is threatened with the release of Khan. We split Pakistan into two halves. They could have attacked Kashmir in 1962. They did not. They made the bombs after we provokedly by exploding ours. Muslims got the bombs after Christians, Jews, Aethists, Buddhits and us got the bombs. Why are we crying. Are we cry babies? Oh' we are jelous as usual. We hate Glorious Muslim Hisotry of India. We don't want to listen Muslims ruled the world for 1000 years. They had managed to create the greatest ever civilization on this planet. Why don't we just explode or export Lal Khila, Taj Mahal, Khutub Minar, Lal Masjid and oher magneficinet towers to other. We should also export great Khans like Dilip Kuman and Shah Rukh. Let us remove Naushad, the greatest music director. Oh AR Rahman too. Fools.

Concerned US wants Pak assurance over Khan's release by Ratan Gupta on 07 Feb 2009

Why the world is crying? How America and Russia became nuke powers? By smuggling the human resources and technology from Germany. China has imported secretly technology from Russia, Europe and America. India has send its numerous scientists overseas and collaborated with Canada, America and Russia and became nuke power. Israel, the greatest theft project in the nuke history has removed trucks after trucks from European roads and imported into Israel. This is the greatest robbery of nuclear weapons in history of mankind. What is wrong if Paksitan got the hands into? I don't see any problem. First, no terrorist has used nuke. Second no terrorist can use nukes since it requires huge logistical support. This are not toys. Third, America bombed two cities, many times came closer to bomb cuba and Russa and other countries. Vowed to bomb again. France threatened to retaliate with nukes if provoked. China has threatened to use it. Hypocrites.

Cringing America by Hero Vaz on 07 Feb 2009

It is amazing to see America cringing. Is that all America can do - ask for assurances and that too from a terrorist state that has proved to be untrustworthy and whose name in the world is mud.

Hit when its hot by romesh.sharma on 07 Feb 2009

USAmerican leaders will never understand that anything and everything said/asured,promised and comitted by Pakistan has no value and doesn't even need a dustbin to be thrown in.Pakistan will come-up with thousand many colourful assurances which they had already chalked out before declaring AQKhan officially free person. He was always free and had contact with each and every person he desired.Under house-arrest like he had one feels more comfortable and secure to carry on plans and deals.US couldn't even question Khan and what assurance they can have/hope fromPak is only matter of consolations. Its tit-for-tat.Pakistan knows how to keep USA busy and in constant touch through which they can profit. Its a reply to socalled US pressure on Pak.USA couldn't do anything against NKorea and Iran and Pak knows it that USA simply can't afford any punitive action against any antion. With economy absolute in cellar the US has become very soft and weak and is wasting time with words but no action.

Nuclear supply Chains by Mahesh Naik on 07 Feb 2009

U.S. wants assurances from Pakistan over Dr.Khan's release by R.S.RAJAN on 07 Feb 2009

President Barrack Obama and Secy of State Hillary Clinton will undergo kneejerk reaction in announcing further military sops and aid of another US$ 10 aid to force Pakistani ISI remote controlled PM and President of Pakistan committ to them that Mr.Khan will not be allowed to conduct clandestine proliferation activities in their soil. Can any fool on earth these Pakistani nefarious traitors ?? But, U.S. will tend to beleive them and offer appreciable miliatary/financial package aid knowing fully well they will be directed against India only in connivance with China. We need to defend ourselves only and can not trust USA to defend us.We can build up pressure on Pakistan from United nations and other comity of nations who belevie in world order of peace that they persuade Pakistan to disssociate itself from its nefarious designs against India,USA,israel and all european countries subscibing to the pholosophy of Christinanity. It is a fact, Pakistan stands today as epicenter of terror.

Rlease of A.Q.Khan from house arrest by V.Shanmuganathan on 07 Feb 2009

Pakistan is a rogue state and will remain as a rogue state and no power in the world can streamline the country. If this A.Q.Khan is arrested and stoped there will be thousands of Khans will rise in Pakistan and see that the world is not safe by the way of mashrooming the terrorists. If the US and the west really wants tocontain Pakistan from such terrorist activities they should declare Pakistan as terrorist nation and should impose santions against Pakistan, which will only save the world from the destruction from the Paksitani "Jahadis".
