Kolkata, June 23 The state government is planning to shift the Assembly from its present location in the BBD Bag area to Rajarhat in view of the the need for greater security cover.

“In today’s complex security situation, decongestion of the BBD Bag area has become very important. Eden Gardens and Netaji Indoor Stadium are located near the Assembly and if any function or game is on in any of these places, getting out of the Assembly becomes very difficult. From the security point of view it is undesirable,” said Assembly Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim.

Another reason being cited for this plan is that the BBD Bag area — which houses all important state government offices, including Writers’ Buildings, Raj Bhavan, Calcutta High Court — has become congested.

“In a day or two, I will discuss with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Minister for Housing Gautam Dev the plan to shift the Assembly to Rajarhat,” he added.

Halim said security around the new Assembly complex will be tightened further following the directive from the Union Home Ministry.

“After the Jaipur blasts, the Centre has asked us to tighten the security around vital installations. Since the Assembly building is a sensitive place, we have to enhance security there,” the Speaker further said.

As per the state government’s plan, the present assembly will be converted into a state-of-the-art international conference centre.

The Speaker, meanwhile, announced that the Budget session of the state Assembly will begin from July 1 and go on till July 31.

Six Bills, including the West Bengal Madrasa Service Commission Bill and the West Bengal Land Reform Bill are going to be introduced in this session.

Two of the three GNLF members of the Assembly, Pranay Rai and Gaulan Lepcha, who have quit the party have now become “unattached” members of the Assembly, the Speaker said.
