Condoms aggravate AIDS problem: Pope

Pope Benedict

London As the Pope embarked on his landmark visit to Africa, the pontiff courted controversy by declaring that condoms were not a solution to the AIDS epidemic but it ‘aggravates the problems’.

The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the killer disease.

81-year-old Pope Benedict told mediapersons en route to Cameroon that AIDS ‘is a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, and that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems’, ‘The Times’ newspaper reported on Tuesday.

He has earlier said the ‘traditional teaching of the Church’ on chastity outside marriage and fidelity within it had proved to be ‘the only sure way of preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS’.

Some priests and nuns working with those living with HIV/AIDS question the church's opposition to condoms amid the pandemic ravaging Africa.

Two years ago there was speculation that the Vatican might overturn its ban on condoms after Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, the former Archbishop of Milan, said that in couples where one partner had HIV/AIDS, the use of condoms was ‘a lesser evil’, the report said.

AIDS by J.Raja Sekhar on 18 Mar 2009

The advertizement which is going on on AIDS is 'Use Condoms and avoid the AIDS'. It is not a real and useful solution for the problem. Confined to one partner is the solution for the dreaded deceise. the wrong notion of the advertizement says that use condoms and do all the non sense. It should chane the attitude of the people.

pope and condoms by omar on 18 Mar 2009

Pope commenting on the condoms is sad rather he must stand firm in religious teachings, that is going away from martial affairs is always a problem. If people are not controlling their desire then teach them to control the desire, rectification after the disease is not a good sign but to prevent it is the idea. Now a days in paper we see news and photos of actresses in a dress like under wear and we talk about condoms.Stop the spread of inhuman projection of girls in news and magazines to avoid polluting the men, women and children to avoid all these problems.Self determination is the primary requirement for this problem and even pope advices to stop all inhuman pratices no body will listen him.We as public should be self determined and teach our families and societies of our culture and tradition properly with all good and bad so that they come matured enough to identify the way they want to lead their lives. If any one knows the evil and pratices it let them answer god.

If he says so.. by Atindra Shukla on 18 Mar 2009

If Pope says so, it must be true. After all he is experienced. About Chastity he needs to read the book of sister Jesme.

Can the pope explain how? by Visa on 18 Mar 2009

This is juts crazy? How can condoms exacerbate the AIDs problem? Just exactly how?

Pope and hiv/aids by k.madhukar on 18 Mar 2009

The problem with Pope and his ilk is they are hopelessly out of touch with the reality.Self restraint, chastity out side marriage are some thing even his bishops and the clergy were not able to follow. How else we can explain the church abuses hitting news paper headlines now and then?Of all the places, Pope has selected poverty and decease stricken continent to air his stupidest statement .

HIV/Condom by Dr. Anuil K. Sarkar. MD on 18 Mar 2009

The Pope is not a doctor and he has no business to talk about HIV or condom. He is a problem to our race and he must shut up and never misguide his blind followers.Dr. Sarkar.

Dear Pope evidently needs some lessons in sex.

Condoms for polygamists / sensual people by Raghu Seshadri on 18 Mar 2009

Chastity may be a way for people who prefer only one partner. There are those who are more sensual and prefer more partners than one. In such cases, condoms are the way out.Humans - men and women - are not instinctively monogamous. What prevents them from going beyond a certain point in chasing their instincts is values - ethics. But, when instinct overpower values, what results is the person crossing the 'Lakshman rekha'. Religions fail to factor this. All pontiffs preach about 'self control', sitting on a hill top. But, man (including the preachers and clergy parish) is after all a product of his instincts / needs (which include sex). Let there be a comprehensive solution.
