Kolkata, March 23 The Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) students returned to their hostels on Sunday afternoon. They had vacated their hostels following the recent incidents of sporadic violence.

The students belonging to both the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Independent Consolidation (IC), alleged they were threatened by students of the opposite faction and asked to vacate the hostels on March 20.

The university authorities, however, maintained that the students were trying to create trouble so that the examinations scheduled to begin from Monday could not be conducted.

The face-off between SFI and IC notwithstanding, students of both factions agreed they have to go through an ordeal each time they are asked to vacate the hostel. “I could not carry my books, not even my money bag. We were whisked to the station at 12.30 am and had to wait there till the morning,” said a student.

BESU Registrar Biman Bandopadhyay said that asking the students to vacate the hostels was a preventive measure taken by the university administration. “The disciplinary committee will meet on

Tuesday to investigate what actually happened,” he added.

“We have fixed new guidelines for the students. They should carry identity cards with them and return to their hostels by 10.30 pm. A strict vigil will ensure that they are not using alcohol or drugs and are not found loitering outside the hostel after 10.30 pm,” Bandopadhyay said.

He assured that the mid-semester beginning from Monday will be conducted smoothly.

Students meet Dasmunsi
A students’ delegation from BESU met WBPCC chief Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi on Sunday and requested his intervention in the ongoing turmoil in the university. “I have heard that innocent students are being targetted by SFI-backed goons. This should not happen. I have already spoken to the DGP about the law and order situation in the university. Anti-SFI students are being constantly harassed. The university authorities should see that the academic functioning of the institute is not disrupted,” said Dasmunsi.
