Cong, DMK engaged in talks as Lalu's name crops up again

New Delhi The Indian National Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which is in power in Tamil Nadu, have reportedly arrived at a formula that could end the deadlock over who from the latter party will make it to the Union Cabinet.

According to sources, the Congress and the DMK have reached an understanding on two Cabinet rank ministers, one Minister of State (with Independent charge), and three Ministers of State.

However, sources say that the DMK is still jostling for a third full Cabinet rank post, which the Congress is reluctant to hand out.

The Congress negotiation team, which comprises Pranab Mukherjee, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel is likely to meet the DMK leadership at Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi in a short while from now for a third round of talks to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, given the deadlock over government formation, which has led to a cancellation of a morning meeting between President Pratibha Devising Patil and the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, the Congress think tank is reportedly seriously considering the re-inclusion of former Railway Minister Lalu Yadav in the Cabinet in move designed to send out a firm message to UPA allies not to overstep their bargaining positions.

Lalu, whose Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party did not fare well in this year’s general elections, has offered unconditional outside support to the Congress-led UPA.

Earlier in an interview to a Hindi television channel, Lalu said that no one should write him off politically despite the electoral results. Saying that this was not the first time that he had bitten the political dust, he warned that he would come back politically stronger, and therefore, his rivals should not underestimate him.

When asked whether relations with the Congress and more specifically the Gandhi family had deteriorated, Lalu said that ties with the family and the party were just fine, and added that in politics, ups and downs take place.

He also expressed confidence about becoming the country’s Prime Minister one-day.

Gutless Congress by Hero Vaz on 22 May 2009

Is there no better and decent way to send out a message than to induct a crook into the cabinet to achieve that? What a pathetic situation. And the Congress claims it has come out very strong in the election. Does their strength lie in using crooks to serve their purpose? Woe unto the people who believe that the Congress will show guts in governing the country with the honesty that is required.

CONGRESS- COMMUNAL PARTY. by B. N. Mandhar Gurdaspuri on 21 May 2009

Congress has always added 'communal'color tO politics in India.Congress divided India on the basis of'comunal' Two-Nation-Theory paraded by Muslim league of Jinnah-Liaqat combine and greedily grabbed by Nehru-Maulana conbine, resulting in 20 m deaths and 200 m displacement of homeless refugees and biggest migration of population in world history.Congress set up Dera Sacha Sauda under a Muslim priest at Sirsa in 1947 to counter Master Tara Singh's demands on Punjab.Congress conducted Operation Blue Star on Golden Temple

Laloo should be minister. by B.K.Chapra on 21 May 2009

If Mr Laloo is taken in the cabinet,Sonia ji will send message to the public and party members that she knows the person better than others, she regards the virtues of a man.Laloo ji is outspoken, but he can do excellent jobs what others can not do.He is not like Pranab Mukhargee, who always looks to the face of Sonia ji before taking any decision, which shows no confidence in himself. Everyone aspire for better, if Laloo aspire to be P.M., what is bad.I too would like to be minister but desire without becomming deserving has no value. There is no politician in the country who is not corrupt except very few, can be named on fingures.Laloo is a self decision maker. All decisions can be good only of God, and he is not. This time if his party did not do well, does mean that he need to improve his out look.40% voting showes that we are at fault and not politicains.

Lalu, THE BEST-EVER Railway Minister, should retain the PORTFOLIO. by v r narayan on 21 May 2009

Lalu is down but not out. He is bound to bounce back. So he should not be written off politically. He was the BEST EVER Railway Minister. He is a GENIOUS. He would be a JEWELL in Dr Manmohan Singh's CROWN!! Moreover, he has 4 MPs. So, even mathematically he should get one cabinet birth.

Mr by Kalyan Majumdar on 21 May 2009

Lalu must not be included in the cabinet,as he will bring disrepute to the UPA.UPA seems to be poised and able to form an honest and corruption free cabinet and Lalu therefore must be excluded. Also his lambasting against Congress prepoll should not be ignored.

UPA by SVS Subrahmaniam on 21 May 2009

This is a classic example of “threat” of regional parties to the national politics. We have been hearing the words, “council of ministers” and “collective responsibility of the cabinet”. From these words what I understand is that any decision or action of any minister is on the approval of the PM and it is binding on all. If that is being the case, what is the selection and demand of the portfolios by the allies? The very concept of “prerogative” of the PM is being defeated. Are these ministers working under the PM or under their respective party leader? In the last government we had seen advertisements in press with Karunanidhi photo in the achievements of the ministry by Maran. How Karunanidhi comes in to picture for the success of the ministry of Maran in the union cabinet? Are these types of trends speaking any national sentiment or they are presenting the regional chauvinism? I advise Sonia-Manmohan duo to stop this process of individual selecting the ministries.

THE STARKING FACT ABOUT THE BIHAR VERDICT by Anand on 21 May 2009

I fail to understand this overwhelming mandate to Nitish Kumar in Bihar for his so-called developmental agenda. Everyone is aware that Bihar recorded the lowest polling accounting to a miserable 40%. JDU and BJP together have polled only 37% of the valid vote, but that they got 32 seats out of 40 which is disproportional to the real strength. If the RJD/LJP and Congress had combined then the JDU/BJP tally would have been reduced by nearly 13 seats. So what is this developmental agenda all about ?? With a turnout of under 40% it seems that the people of Bihar were not enthusiastic about the Nitish developmental agenda.

Lalu's ambition to become Prime Minister by MKN Kurup on 21 May 2009

Lalu has got neither capability nor morality to get a Sarpanch's post. In 2004 the circumstances were totally different and the then the Parties in the UPA conglomeration had no other option but to take Lalu, who was facing serious corruption cases, to the Cabinet. However, during the just concluded election, he thought that by joining hands with his former political opponent Mr. Ramvilas Paswan, the Congress Party would be wiped out from Bihar. But contrary to his ambition and expectation, the people of Bihar appreciated the good work being done by the present NDA Government and overwhelmingly voted for it. If Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh reward Mr. Lalu with a Ministership he will get the Chair for the time being but if Mr. Lalu but his dream of becoming Prime Minister can never be a reality.

Hankering for Cabinet berths by K.R.Santhanam on 21 May 2009

It is sickening to see the fighting going on behind the scene for the number of ministerial berths major parties are demanding unabashedly. Are they not people's representatives?Does it not show that certain ministries are more lucrative than others? How are they going to serve us if their only intent is to get berths of promise?

comment by Gopiballabh Biswas on 21 May 2009

Today's alliance or otherwise is mostly with fragments that were once part of INC. TMC for example.Did not allow us any potential winnable seat in south bengal, though they maybe clamouring for vital portfolio now.RJD's no-more-than 3 was an insult to us. This time one noticeable thing is that our growth is well spread out across the country. To keep this up, we need to cuatiously determine which fragments to ignore or to part with and go on our own. Because , even just before results were out , we were not sure to get over 200 alone and was frantically thinking of allies. Therefore , till we are fully able to go on our own for sufficient growth to win a seat, we need to keep in mind the fact of joining of non-communal fragments together to surpass our strength. One scheme, this time could be well-thought-out plan to redress the lending by Mahajans at high rate of interest, say by bank o/d and repayment mechanism. Mahajani system is a curse in many rural parts.

WHO WILL SUPPORT THIS JOKER TURNED SCAM MASTER TO BECOME P.M. by Kav on 21 May 2009

WHY THESE CONGRESS HEADLESS MORON CHICKENS ARE KEEN TO GIVE MINISTRY TO THIS JOKER TURNED SCAM MASTER ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?THE PEOPLE OF BIHAR REJECTED THESE MORON. HE IS DEAD. WHY GIVE LIFE TO HIM ? ? ?LET HIM PERISH AND VANISH WITH HER ILLITERATE WIFE SILLY COW RABRI.GOD BLESS BHARAT

Looting the State, still not enough ?? by Aniyan on 21 May 2009

Lalu should accept that the people in Bihar are becoming more educated now to end their dark days under Lalu and his wife. They demand their share now and they shold get it. Lalu made them understood the illiterates that he is feeding them from his own farm. They knew now that even if it is from his farm, it is the loot of govt. So, Lalu, you are finally out finally and do not aspire much again.

DMK and its Tall Demands by SVS Subrahmaniam on 21 May 2009

Is it necessary to entertain such hard bargain with DMK? After all they also are dependent on Congress for their survival in Tamil Nadu. It is unfair on the part of DMK to hype the matter to this level. Again I repeat with just 18 seats of Karunanidhi it is this case, what about YSR of Andhra Pradesh who has given solid 33 seats to UPA? He could not demand any thing because he is from Congress? After giving so many berths to Karunanidhi who is dependent on congress for his survival, if UPA does not give for Andhra Pradesh so many seats in that proportion (just because it is congress in AP) is it not doing injustice to AP? Sonia _ Manmohan duo should keep in mind this point in mind and should not do injustice to AP just because it has elected Congress MPs to UPA. If it is difficult to accommodate so, they MUST trim DMK also to that proportion to that of awarded to AP.
