New Delhi, July 19: As suspense mounted ahead of the July 22 trust vote in Parliament, Congress president Sonia Gandhi met her party MPs on Saturday asking them to put up a united face to ensure Government's victory in the trial of strength.

Mrs Gandhi began meeting Congress MPs in batches at her 10, Janpath residence as the party managers struggled hard to secure the magic figure of 271 required for the survival of the party-led coalition.

There was intense speculation on Saturday that four of the five JMM MPs would support the government but the party chief Shibu Soren, who is being wooed by both the ruling UPA and opposition NDA, kept his cards close to his chest.

Soren is reportedly insisting on his induction into the cabinet for extending his party's support. His party's parliamentary board is expected to take a decision on supporting the Government on Saturday.

However, JMM chief whip and Giridih MP Teklal Mahto said that "we are with the UPA. All the party MPs would vote in favour of the government."

Mahto's statement assumes significance in wake of the fortnight-long suspense being maintained by the party over the issue.

In the numbers game, the ruling UPA still appeared to be short of a dozen MPs for simple majority in the Lok Sabha which has an effective strength of 541 and was heavily banking on small groups like the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), National Conference and JD(S) but mixed signals were emanating from the Deve Gowda-led party.

Gowda is expected to make known his party's stand after meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who had a telephonic talk with him Friday.

Congress prades its MPs by Varind on 19 Jul 2008

While Congress was busy parading its flock, Amar Singh was meeting Pappu Yadav in Jail, and Laloo Parsad was telling media that UPA has 291 MPs. If this is the status then why necessity of the Parade? Nevertheless, congress will pay the price for joining hands with most communal, fascit party (SP) which will be left with two dictators Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh. Penny wise, pound foolish. While SP's most of the MPs are feeling suffocated and abandoning the ship, Amar Singh is wooing Pappu Yadav.

Let us Reform Our Democracy by N.Vasisht on 19 Jul 2008

The whole fault lies in our system! And dasly the fourth estate and intellectuals and citizens groups are silent accomplices for this farce of a democracy. Before it is late, let us reform the elctoral and voting system. Our constitution makers were wither myopic or incompetent not to see the big loopholes in allowing the right of voting all Tom Dick and Harry with the result that for the past 60 years we have the majority of incompetent, shady, corrupt and even criminal representatives ruling us and hurting our nation in all areas.Let us limit votinjg to all those who register and to only those who have a munimum qualification of intermediate degree so that the voters know how to disntinguish good and and the bad candidates at elections. Let us also make voting compulsory for all registered voters and mkae non-voting, in absence of sufficient reasons,a punishable offence with fine so say, 1000 or or so. Will our corrupt parties and politicians agree for reforms is unclear
