Thiruvananthapuram Continuing with its impressive performance in the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress- led UDF retained all three assembly seats where bypolls were held, routing the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF.

The LDF suffered a blow in politically sensitive Kannur, where Congress candidate and former CPI-M MP A P Abdullakutty emerged victorious by a margin of 12,000 votes over CPI-M's M V Jayarajan.

Abdullakutty, who represented Kannur twice in parliament on a CPI-M ticket, was expelled from the party a few months back following serious differences with the CPI-M leadership, after which he joined the Congress.

Congress candidates Dominic Presentation trounced CPI-M's P N Sinulal in Ernakulam by over 8000 votes, while his colleague A A Shukur retained Alappuzha seat by defeating G Krishaparasad of CPI by 4000 votes.

The November 7 by-polls were necessitated by resignation of sitting Congress MLAs K Sudhakaran (Kannur), K V Thomas (Ernakulam) and K C Venugopal (Alappuzha) on getting elected to Lok Sabha.

The results showed that UDF had been able to consolidate its Lok Sabha performance of lifting 16 of the 20 seats in the state. The current round of elections were seen as a dress rehearsal for the 2011 assembly polls to be preceded by the civic elections next year.

Despite its best efforts and high voltage campaign, the LDF failed to reverse the rout it faced in Parliamentary polls.

Congress wins one, leads another in Assam

Congress candidate Bimananda Tanti defeated his AGP rival Sivacharan Sahu by 21029 votes in Dhekiajuli Assembly constituency of Assam.

Congress candidate is also leading in south Salmara seat over his AUDF rival by over 4,000 votes. Bypolls were held for both the seats on November 7.

should follow Two-Party System by Noman on 12 Nov 2009

India should follow Two-Party System..........small parties like CPIM and all will affect the stability and growth of this republic. We should not allow this......I prefer Congress and BJP, BJP which is free from its current Hindu ideology.........Their policies are not acceptable for men living in modern world.......

Pinarayi Vijayan - the culprit, Kick him Out. by Aniyan on 10 Nov 2009

The biggest culprit of this defeat is none other than the goonda and street cultured CPM state secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, who leads five star life. Let the cameramen of media go to his Kannur Luxurious Bunglow and find out his way of life. He is not a communist. He has floated all the ideology of communism. Kick him out and save CPM in Kerala.

KERALA BY ELECTION RESULTS by Sreenivasan E.C. on 10 Nov 2009

All the three seats vacated by Congress Party are safely back into their hands through these by-elections. However, it appears that the people in general were not very enthusiastic in voting in favour of Congress as they were during the last Parliament elections. The victory margins have reduced in all these three constituencies and in Alappuzha the margin is as low as 4900 votes. In comparison to last elections, these results are in favour of the Left Front in Kerala though the seats are still with Congress.

result of their karma by Appu on 10 Nov 2009

What all rules they are bringing in Kerala. All rules are for common man not for business man. In Trichur, Shoba city and Lulu Yousuf Ali filled acres of paddy field, there was no problem. But a common man ask approval to fill 5 cent land to build a house, they bring all kind of rules... This is only a beginning. they are going to face more..

Bypoll results from Kerala and West Bengal is really a blow to Prakash Karat.CPM's leaders in both states are un reachable for common man and they are with Industrialists and businessmen.Party's central leadership doesn't know the pulse of common man.Karat is yet to prove that he is a real leader.

Left's defeats in Polls by Varind on 10 Nov 2009

Leftists will pay heavy price for their unprincipaled support to UPA last time. No tears will be shed if they are wiped out completely in future elections. Leftists and SP has committed a sin and nation will never pardon them. They are reaping what they have sown.

Commies can go to China by Gopal Menon on 10 Nov 2009

They fired foolishly, People fired wisely. by George P. Joseph on 10 Nov 2009

Wide spread propaganda of inner party troubles of CPM through all media bagged a wrong impression. Destitutes, who are the backbone of CPM, have not been cared properly due to the factionism emanated in the Party. If things will go without a harmony and Destitutes have been fired comprising of all other Parties, the faith of depending on CPM will evaporate in theirown States. Destitutes in any Party will have an inclination to CPM as a last resort for them. The by-election says so.

Kerala by elections by choomma on 10 Nov 2009

It is said that people get the rulers they deserve and it just goes to show what kind of people the kannur electorate is made up of. They voted into power a man who till a few months back was a dyed in black marxist sympathiser and is now a avid gandhi family sycophant and tomorrow may go on to disowning even his father. well good luck to him and those who voted for him. One may not see anything lower in public morality than that for a long time.

Fitting Reply by abraham on 10 Nov 2009

It is obviously a fitting reply by the people of kerala to the arrogant and blind leadership of Marxist Party. This is only the begning of the end of communist.
