Kolkata, March 4 The state Congress leadership has demanded an investigation into the distribution of vested land pattas to landless peasants of Nandigram.

Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the state Assembly, Manash Bhuniya, alleged that those who were given land pattas on Tuesday include a majority of CPM beneficiaries, a section of whom do not deserve pattas. “I request the chief minister to order an investigation into the list of the patta beneficiaries,” Bhuniya said.

He added, “I appreciate the chief minister’s appeal for peace. But how can this happen when CPM cadres are out on the streets to kill people?”

The Congress has decided to mark March 14 police firing incident by organising silent processions. One such procession is expected to commence at Beliaghata and conclude at the Gandhi statue in Maidan. “Moreover, Pradesh Congress chief Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi is expected to visit Nandigram on March 14,” Bhuniya said.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress has also blamed CPM cadres for the violence in Nandigram. “We really wonder how come the CM makes an appeal (for peace) without controlling their (CPM) own armed cadres, who are responsible for unrest and killing of innocent villagers at Nandigram,” said Partha Chatterjee, Leader of the Opposition. He added, “The government is not permitting CRPF to perform its duty. The CM must understand that without punishing the culprits who are responsible for mass killing, his attempt of luring people by offering pattas to his own people, will not heal the wounds of the common people of Nandigram.”
