Kottayam, February 11: The Left would not allow the UPA Government to forge strategic alliance with the United States and if the Congress was keen to pursue these policies then it should seek a fresh mandate, CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat said on Monday.

"We have made it clear that no government supported by our party and the Left would allow the government to forge such an alliance with the United States. We would like to tell the Congress that if it likes to have a strategic alliance with US, take these issues to the people in the next Lok Sabha polls," Karat said in his opening address to the state conference of the CPI-M in Kottayam.

He also criticised the Centre for allowing ISRO to launch an Israeli spy satellite.

The Left would not allow the UPA to cement and forge ties with the US including the nuclear agreement, he said.

On domestic issues, he claimed that the Left had been able to check, to a certain extent, the government from implementing policies like opening up of banking and insurance sector, privatisation of PSUs and free-entry of MNCs in retail sector.

Also, under the Left's pressure, the government was made to take up certain pro-people legislations like Rural Employment Programme and the Forest Tribals Act, he added.

123deal by India American on 11 Feb 2008

Karat and his cronies should stop interfering with center. Once they form alliance they should shut up and just watch India's progress. If they realize that progress is made and there are more jobs then may be they should jump party and join some non communist party or congress where ever they are welcome. That will good for them and for the country!

Indian government should ignore Left parties and go ahead with the finalistion of Indo-US nuclear deal by P.P. TALWAR on 11 Feb 2008

The left parties who are supporting the ruling UPA government from outside, yet enjoying the fruits of the ruling party without any liability are only serving the cause of their masters China and Russia by opposing the Indo-US nuclear deal which is greatly beneficial to India. Once the Indo-US nuclear deal, 123 Agreement is fianlised the much needed fuel like uranium for which Indian nuclear reactors are starving will be avaialble to generate the energy for industrialistion and country's straegic needs. The communists are known traitors in Indian history whose contribution to India's freedom struggle is NIL. Only three states in the country viz., Bengal, Kerala and Tripura which they are ruling are ill-developed, as compared to the rest of the country. Our government should not be cowed down by the communist's hollow threats of withdrawl of support, because they know too well that in the event of mid term poll for Lok Sabha, The left parties shall meet their waterloo.

trapped congress by sunil on 11 Feb 2008

I am of the opinion that basically Congress is responsible for this situation. They should have cleared their agenda before forming the government at the centre. Congress thought that they will bend everbody as per their wish showing fear of BJP but could not succeed in the mission and now traped themselves.

Fresh mandate by Popuri on 11 Feb 2008

gutless Congress and malevolent communists---- by romesh.sharma on 11 Feb 2008

Karat and co,the communist traitors, are not only most untrustworthy but abominable chartchers who lie every time they open mouth. The Congress too is no better which has no guts and do all that what is being dictated by them.Left will not allow like threats are mere show business to fool the people while behind the scenes they are like hand and glove.Look how boldly the he is objecting ISRO to launch an Israeli spy sttelite! They are openly hindering India's relationship with the nations India must have to defend and protect the country. They wish India to be Chinese colony. This man,Karat had lost a word when China objected PM's overture/concern about Arunachal. This and his alikes are to be booked and not Raj Thackeray. These are mere empty threats which are planned with Congress consent, both parties are anti-nation working secertly together.After-all they are inter-dependents.
