Congo says no to 'abusive' Indian peacekeepers

Kinshasa The Congolese government has written to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon asking him not to send any more Indian troops to reinforce its peacekeeping mission, according to a letter.

India is not mentioned by name, but diplomatic sources told AFP that the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo is without doubt referring to the Indian contingent of MONUC, the UN peacekeeping mission.

"In view of the numerous abuses of power carried out by certain troops within MONUC, the (Congolese) people would not understand if soldiers from the same country would be used to boost numbers within MONUC," says the letter, which was read to AFP by diplomatic sources.

Indian peacekeepers have been accused of sexual abuse and MONUC admitted in August that some Indian troops could have been involved.

The letter could prove a major diplomatic embarrassment to the UN. Some 90 per cent of the peacekeepers patrolling the troubled Nord-Kivu region are from India and New Delhi is also providing assault helicopters for the mission.

The UN Security Council voted last Thursday to send 3,000 reinforcements to the country, which countries will supply the extra troops and when is still to be undecided.

Indian Peacekeers a SHAME by Micheal Mabenga on 15 Dec 2008

I concur with most view regading Indian Peacekeepers. They only want to be where it os cozy so when Nkunda strikes them they all dash weeping back to base. Theymonopolise UN observer appointments by filling any empty appointment and 'indianizing' it permanently. Their material support to Nkunda is quite evident from the fact that Nkunda's Toyota Landcruiser refuels from Indian Camps in North Kivu ! We need ASAP ( African Solution to Afican Problem) away with the indians !

look who's talking by Rajat sood on 13 Mar 2009

Dear Michael..yesterday you wanted indian soldiers to fight with CNDP and considered CNDP as biggest enemy..today you,ve integrated them and treating them and RDf as your protectors and mentors....what a U turn...Had african soldiers been able to solve the problem it would have finished in 2002 only,..so rather than spitting shit on other,s look into your shoes first and do your bit...for your nation at least.

Abusive Indian Peace keepers by Roger on 27 Nov 2008

I am happy that Congo has stood up against the Indians, Indians have no credibility and have no character.

LOOK WHO IS TALKING by sunil on 26 Nov 2008

It is really unfortunate for the govt of congo to even think on these lines when the army of theres is in absolute disarray FARDC is the biggest culprit of HR abuses where abuse cases run into 100s for every day They under a political ploy wants to palm off there failure with rebel troops onto Indian peacekepers Its due to Indians that peace is still holding

Why do we have soldiers there at all ? by Anirban on 26 Nov 2008

Why we would be sending our soldiers in harm's way to a country where people have been killing each other for the last 40 years, and where we have zero national interest is something I find impossible to understand. Are the lives of our soldiers so cheap ? Congo's main cities have a substantial Indian population, so if we wish to maintain a strong contingent in Kinshasa for their protection, fine, but why are we sending our soldiers to "keep the peace" there never has and never will be peace in that place
