Varanasi Without making any announcement or information to its cadres, the Congress party on Monday quietly changed its candidate for Bisalpur Assembly seat in Pilibhit district, giving the ticket to sacked BSP minister Anis Ahmad Khan, alias Phool Babu, who was sacked by Chief Minister Mayawati following reports of misuse of his MLA’s fund. He was also denied ticket by Mayawati

In the past, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders had criticised the BJP for inducting tainted BSP men, including former Family Welfare Minister Babu Singh Kushwaha and former Labour Minsiter Badshah Singh.

While Kushwaha is an accused in the NRHM scam, Badshah Singh was indicted by the Lokayukta for land grab and operating under two names. The BJP has put Kushwahna’s membership on hold but allowed Badshah to contest from Mahoba in Bundelkhand.

Congress’ latest nominee, Anis Ahmad Khan was sacked as minorities welfare minister by Mayawati on December 30 along with three other ministers. Another sacked minister Rajpal Tyagi was given the ticket by the Samajwadi Party.

By accommodating Khan, the Congress has dropped is Dev Swaroop Patel. The party has also changed its candidate for Pilibhit, replacing Sayed Zaki Ashraf with BK Gupta.

While investigating a complaint against Khan, UP Lokayukta NK Mehrotra had found that Anis Ahmad had diverted his MLA fund to an educational trust owned by him and his family members. In a report in May last year, the Lokayukta had recommended recovery of about Rs 94.23 lakh from Khan.
