New Delhi With the UPA alliance in Bihar virtually collapsing, Congress announced that it will contest 37 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats and leave only three for the RJD and LJP.

"We have decided to contest on 37 seats in Bihar. We want to leave three seats, two on which Lalu Prasad would contest and one on which Ram Vilas Paswan would contest," senior Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters.

RJD and LJP had left only three seats for the Congress under the seat sharing agreement announced by them unilaterally.

Shinde, who is chairman of the screening committee on Bihar said he would be "sending a list of names (seats) to the Central Election Committee for approval".

The Congress leader claimed that the party workers were "very agitated and their dissatisfaction was at such a level that it getting difficult to convince them."

Congress in Bihar by J.M.Manchanda on 22 Mar 2009

It makes sense to contest elections on one's own rather than be left with three seats in Bihar. But Congress needs to do more in a State riven with casteism. It must canvass aggressively and expose parties, which have prosperedwhile the poor were forced to migrate elsewhere. It must encourage local leadership to assume responsibility and focus on an agenda of growth and development. A major reson for the party losing its stronghold in such States was rivalry within its ranks and autocratic functioning of Congress high command. Inner party democracy and new faces may still reenergise the party.

bihar elections by t.k.koshy on 22 Mar 2009

Lalu's intensions are clear--reduce the Congress party to a virtually ineffective power and project himself as the next PM candidate. with so many claimants for PM's post Lalu feels he will have a good chance with support from the likes ofKarat.Congress has done the right thing. calling the bluff of Lalu and going to the people instead of running scared---people can now have a wider choice than regional parties only.

Bihar goes to BJP by Indian on 21 Mar 2009

Good for the BJP and Nitish Kumar. with a split in the Anti-Hindu vote the BJP can hope to make a come back in Bihar with a bang. This is not my wishful thinking , AntiHindus (secularists) but a fall out of the UPA in-fighting

Loksabha Seats in Bihar by MOHANDADDIKAR on 21 Mar 2009

The congess has shown some real maturity as a national party in devaluing Lallu and Paswan by deciidng to contest most of of the loksabha seats in Bihar. It is the unwillingness of Congress and BJP to support each other is the root cause of the undeserving importance being given to provincial tribal leaders.

congress by yohan on 21 Mar 2009

with this congress will be reduced to a regional party of which state? God only knows? maximum 8 seats in a state not exceeding 70 seats overall. they wont have any tie ups with regional parties and will fight alone. without regional parties' support, how they can win. wishful thinking. best planning. this is the result of their arrogance
