New Delhi Targeting the government’s Lokpal fiasco in the Rajya Sabha, senior BJP leader LK Advani on Saturday charged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with “conspiratorial silence and acquiescence” on the issue, saying he opted for silence at a time when the country expected “honest transparent leadership” from him.

In a stinging New Year eve statement, he said Singh’s government resorted to deceit while avoiding the vote in the upper house on the Lokpal Bill. “It (UPA government) exhibited arrogance, ineptitude and deceit in equal measure in dealing with the demand for a strong, independent and effective Lokpal,” he said.

“I, for one, am not in the least bit surprised that the year 2011 ended with the UPA government literally fleeing from vote in the Rajya Sabha on its own version of the Lok Sabha Bill,” he said. He said “the fraud on democracy, which the nation witnessed on the night of December 29, was unprecedented”.

Advani and Singh have crossed paths, especially in Parliament, on a number of occasions earlier. While Advani has called him the “weakest Prime Minister” ever, the latter has equally taken jibes at him. In his latest statement, Advani said he had never seen a government invite such ignominy upon itself because of “virtual evaporation of responsibility” on the part of the Prime Minister.

Advani said the spate of scams that the government found itself embroiled in has “robbed it of its legitimacy to rule”. He said the credibility of the government “nosedived in direct proportion to the scale of the scandals”, and Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi were engaged in “desperate acts of scapegoating” trying to ensure bigger heads did not roll.

Bjp...crocodile tears by hariharan on 01 Jan 2012

BJP wants to degrade Govt at every opportunity. Everybody knows that in Rajyasabha congress lacks majority.Had congress been insensitive they would not have got it passed in loksabha.Be that as it may the same BJP by joining hands with trinamool talks of attack on authority of States under federal structure. If BJP is so intended to pass the bill they could have helped GOVT.The main motto of BJP is to scuttle the bill and show crocodile tears so that anna issue will continue to occupy centrestge and this may give a leeway to them in coming elections. One thing is for sure that corruption is more at state level as common man has to face rationing authorities ,police etc whicch comes under State so Congress is correct lokayukta is necessary

Conspiratorial silence: Advani stings PM by Naidu on 01 Jan 2012

Sir, take the people of this country to task as long as you can. People of the country or their welfare is never the priority, but the rulers ae the priority. Leaders of Congress to major share and of BJP to minor share are responsible for this embroglio. Advani Sir, please convey what are you views and what you want not as individual, but as a party

mr by shankar on 01 Jan 2012

Advaniji you may be right in whatever you said about pm. But mark you the country will never accept you as its leader because you are a bigger idiot than all these fellows. Is there anything credible that you have done in all your public life?? Can you explain it to the common man. All you did was like a thug went and demolished the muslim shrine. Can you stop talking vainly and retire from politics. Please save the country from people like you who is arrogant and useless geriatrics who cannot even take care of their very personal needs leave alone leading the country
