Gandhinagar The death of over 100 people following consumption of spurious liquor is fast becoming a political issue in Gujarat, with the Opposition Congress leaving no stone unturned to corner the BJP Government on it.

In a memorandum submitted to Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma, Congress MLAs have termed the hooch tragedy, which has claimed over 107 lives so far, as a case of "constitutional breakdown in the state".

There is a complete constitutional breakdown in the state and the Governor should take appropriate action, the memorandum said.

On the third consecutive day, the Congress staged protests in the Assembly by shouting slogans and demanded a two-hour special debate on the incident. They broke window panes and glass doors and also damaged photographs of leaders in the Assembly.

"In the memorandum, we have said that Gujarat has become an appropriate case of constitutional breakdown and Governor's intervention is required," Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil said.

Earlier, Congress MLAs and youth BJP workers clashed outside the Assembly premises near Mahatma Gandhi's statue.

"In a pre-planned attack, BJP workers assaulted our MLAs with hockey sticks," Gohil alleged, adding, for the first time, even MLAs don't feel safe in the state.

Legalising liquor addiction by Ram on 11 Jul 2009

Tamilnadu state witnessed some of worst hooch tragedies even when prohibition was not in force. The Political leaders have said in one voice that Liquor should be left free for consumption to avoid such hooch tragedies. Today, the government sells liquor at every street, nook and corner thus inviting more citizens to become addict. If the Hooch tragedies kill some hundreds who went illegal, the official patronising of liquor additcion kills families in tens of thousands. Now it is the public choice to choose whichever is better of the two. Congress keeps doing conspiracy in BJP ruled states - e.g this tragedy in Gujarat and mysore riots in Kar. They came to power by EVM fraud and they are doing further frauds.

Out of a billion or so, people in India,a mere 300 Million or so, would know what Democracy or Constitution stands for. If the latter governs the country, in one form or the other, one could be pretty sure, the 300 million ruling cohort are drowning in their own petard!

Constitutional breakdown in Gujarat, says Congress by N.V.SANKARAN on 11 Jul 2009

The death of so many people(latest count is over 120) is quite saddening. But, one should consider this as all the more reason for abstaining from consuming alcoholic liquor. The fall-out surely will be a demand for withdrawing the prohibition in the state which already has been aired by one of the liquor barons of India.According to reports, the government has already apprehended over 800 people suspected of involved in making this poisonous drink. Therefore, the congress party's action is nothing but trying to take political mileage over the dead bodies of the victims of this tragedy. The party has been trying to unseat Modi and his government since last 7 years without success. They have been using every means available to them including a committed media, but have failed.

Congress double speak by A K Narendranath on 11 Jul 2009

During the last sixty years when Congress ruled several states, there used to be hooch tragedies. Wasn't that constitutional break down? Congress appears to be the same old bunch of opportunists. Nothing seems to have changed in that party.

Constitutional Breakdown by M. Parthasarathi on 11 Jul 2009

Actually there is a constitutional breakdown in every State that does nor salute the "first family". The solution is simple: dismiss the state government and impose President's Rule repeatedly until the people of the State learn to vote "correctly" for a government that will promote the three C's - conversion, corruption and capitulation to Jan Path.
