New Delhi A 55-year-old Railway Police constable was beaten to death allegedly by a catering manager of the Railways on Monday morning. Constable Riyaz was beaten up by a catering inspector when the latter was told to carry his goods through the overbridge and not cross over the tracks, police said.

The incident was reported from Platform 1 of New delhi railway station at 6.15 am.

“The catering inspector, Dhanpat, allegedly beat up the constable after an argument and Riyaz fell unconscious. The accused allegedly slapped and kicked him. He did not use any article to hit him. The victim was taken to Lady Hardinge Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” said B S Gurjar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways).

Dhanpat was arrested from the spot.

Riyaz was a resident of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, and is survived by his wife, five daughters and a son.

His relatives and neighbours waited outside the mortuary of Lady Hardinge Hospital, while the postmortem was being conducted.

His brother, Abid Hussain, said he received a call from the police station in the morning saying that Riyaz has met with an accident and is admitted to the ICU. “We rushed the hospital as soon as we received the call. The real story came to light when people from the police station came and told us about the fight. My brother was just doing his duty because of which he got killed. He was the only earning member in the family. Who will support his wife and kids now?” Hussain said.

Riyaz’s wife, Vasihan, sat waiting in a car, oblivious to the tragedy. She was not informed about her husband’s death.

“Bahut der hogai hai, koi khabar aayi kya? Kaise hain woh?,” she asked her son-in-law, Naved.

“We did not want another tragedy, hence we decided not to tell her. She has a 12-year-old son and three unmarried daughters. How will she marry them off now? He had come home a week ago and asked his wife to visit Delhi,” said Naved.

A case was registered against Dhanpat and he was produced at a Tis Hazari court on Monday afternoon.

In his defence, Dhanpat said he did not use any force. “He stopped me from crossing over to the other side using the tracks. I had no other choice since I did not have the staff to transfer the food items. I requested him to let me cross, but he grabbed my jacket and started pushing me. He then tripped and fell off the elevated ramp. I did not use any force, I do not know why am I being implicated,” said Dhanpat.

He has been sent to 14 days judicial custody.
