Kolkata, April 18 In a bid to trace the background and movements of Kalipada Das, the assailant at the Kankurgachi ashram, Kolkata police have sought the cooperation of their counterparts in Jammu, Uttaranchal and Tripura.

“Das had been moving around a lot in these states, where the ashram has branches. We have also come to know that there is a case against the ashram in Tripura filed by two persons, Hariram and Neelkanth, in which Das is said to be deeply involved,” said police sources.

The police are also looking for Das’ antecedents in the state as well as his relatives if any.

“We are yet to establish where he hailed from and whom he met regularly. We are also trying to establish if Das was instigated to carry out the murders by someone else,” they added.

On Wednesday evening, Das had walked into the ashram armed with a bhojali and a knife and had attacked ashram head Guruma Sangeeta Ray.

Those who tried to stop him, including her aide Duli Dutta and another ashramite, Anandakamal Brahmachari, were attacked as well.

While Ray and Dutta died from their injuries, Anandakamal is admitted in a critical condition in a hospital.

As other ashramites struggled with Das, he died from injuries inflicted with a heavy weapon on his head.

Police sources said the weapons used by Das as well as a stone and a hammer found at the murder site, have been sent for a forensic examination.
