The festivity passed off peacefully though minor incidents were reported from some areas of the capital. Senior officials patrolled the city throughout the day ensuring that nothing untoward took place during the celebrations.
Around 40,000 policemen were on the streets on Wednesday keeping a close watch on Holi revellers.
"We have detained about 3,000 people who created problems during the festivity. Thirty others were arrested under preventive detention clause," Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said on Thursday.
An intensive traffic drive was also carried out by police yesterday in which a total of 5,354 challans were issued to those who violated traffic rules while celebrating the festival of colours. The drive was conducted between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
This year's figure is a sort of record for Delhi Police as it is a two-time jump over last year's statistics. Last year, Delhi Police had challaned over 2,100 people on Holi.
A total of 4,577 people were challaned during the drive between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Majority of the violators caught were those riding motorcycle without helmet which accounted for 1,517 cases.
Forty minors were challaned for riding vehicles while 147 were caught while driving without valid licence. Redlight jumping (644), triple riding (559), drunken driving (491), dangerous driving (219) and stopline violation (119) accounted for the other major challans. During the second drive, 1,777 were caught for being on the wrong side of the law. Out of this, 200 were cases of drunken driving.
