Mangalore pub assault

Belgaum/Mangalore Amid the growing outrage over the Mangalore pub assault, Pramod Muthalik, chief of Sri Ram Sena was arrested on Tuesday and 10 other activists suspected to be involved in the incident were picked up as the BJP government in Karnataka claimed that the right-wing outfit had no links with the Sangh Parivar.

The police picked up Muthalik, a former VHP leader, soon after he addressed a press meet at Belgaum. "I apologise. The action taken by our activists is wrong," Muthalik said.

However, he went on to add in a television interview before his arrest that "dancing in the nude and taking drugs is wrong. Our action was aimed at protecting the women".

Muthalik has been arrested under IPC section 153 (provocation with intent to cause riots), Belgaum Superintendent of Police Sonia Narang said.

The Sene chief made it clear that the outfit was not deterred by the police action. "We are going to protest against those celebrating Valentine's day on February 14".

"We condemn the pub culture. In our culture, we respect and salute women and give them status of mother", he said.

Muthalik termed the assault as a ‘chotisi ghatna’ (small incident) and accused the media of blowing it out of proportion.

As the BJP government came under stepped-up attack, 14 more activists of Sri Ram Sene, including its Vice-President Prasad Attavar, were arrested taking the total number of those held to 32.

Our very own Mutaween by Debranjan Dutta on 09 Feb 2009

The Mutaween is the notorious moral police in Saudi Arabia. Even though the Ram Sena is a right winged, hindu organization, which couldnt possibly be further than the tyrannical Wahhabi enforcers, I cannot but point out the similarities in their tactics to subjugate democratic freedoms, and to commit fanatical transgressions. They both subjugate women, are against so called "western influences", are vehemently opposed towards valentines day and consider any public display of affection as a direct slur to their own manhood, thought they're both not below beating up poor hapless women. Whats more, even the name of their Supremo, kind of rhymes with the other organization "Mutalik...Mutaween"Talk about co-incidences,

Sad plight of citizens by Ashwin on 05 Feb 2009

It's a sad day when a local terrorist like Mutalik takes up the mantle of the "guardian of hinduism. Here is a man who has been at the forefront of so many activities targeted at seeding hatred. But the real failure is of the people of this great nation. We don't need foreign powers to destroy India and what it stands for. We have our own citizens to thank for that.In case there is anyone out there who supports this monstrosity called "Ram sena", let me spell this out for you:1) They attacked citizens2) They molested women3) They threaten a way of life4) They cannot accept that which is different5) They threaten your freedomBottom line : THEY ARE NOT HINDUS. These are uneducated thugs who have decided to use religion as a front. Lastly - Who are you, Mr. Pramod Mutalik, to decide how I should live my life? I earn my money, I help India progress by being another cog in the India-machine, I pay my taxes.Who are you? And by who's blessing did you name your thug-army "Ram" sena?

Expose hypocrisy by ANNOYED on 31 Jan 2009

kingfisher should offer a coupon for a liter of whiskey to the family member of any party member who will come forward and collect it in the name of his or her father or mother who occasionally enjoys a small swig. Don't record the names, just provide the numbers.

Jay Rama Sene! by Jayadevan on 29 Jan 2009

Moral policing is a well recognized political tactic. If the Thackerays can amass wealth and power by following a method of beating up defenceless people, who stops Muthalik from following the same pattern? The Shiv Sena is a respected political party in Mumbai, with whom the guardians of our nation have an alliance. If there is a public function in Mumbai, the Tiger is there. So when it came to Muthalik, Yediyurappa sees it as goondaism? This is unfair, to say the least. In any case, Muthalik has won. Who knew him before this, even in Mangalore? Now he has got his name splashed over the media, all over India. Opportunities are everywhere, we have Taslima Nasreen, M F Husain, the Biharis, people insulting Shivaji, Valentine's Day, films degrading Indan Culture, wounding our religious sentiments. It is a no risk business. The police will look on, the victims cannot fight back. And no one checks the truth of our claims. After all, Husain's painting of Saraswati was 20 years old.

Pub Culture by jas on 28 Jan 2009

Vinu, what planet are you living on. Indian culture does not respect woman. Even the most celebrated Hindu God Rama throughly insulted womanhood but the closed minded people like you and Jayant and many other on this board are too blind and bigoted to see and understand the realities of India. A legit bussiness should not be closed, just because some closed minded, religion obsessed dimwits can avail or appreciate its services.

Cowards by Vikram on 28 Jan 2009

Can't media give these photos and videos to nab the animals that use sheep's coat. If they are really much concerned about the culture let them touch the people who bring in drugs within India. I dont think they can dare that. Let them dare to attack liquor manufacturing companies. These are cowards who like to get public attention that they exist.

Really Ironic.. by A real Indian on 28 Jan 2009

This man talks about culture..where is our culture when it comes to beating women..women in our country are like mothers he says..well then where is culture when it comes to beating "mothers"..The really funny thing is that in remote places in India ..the tribals are almost semi naked ..but you dont see them commiting wrong against each other ,so does that mean tribals in our country have more culture and social maturity than these so called moral police..?Makes me sick to call myself an "Indian Man"

Mangalore attack by Sumit on 28 Jan 2009

Oh wow... The chief of the Sri Eam Sena...He is talking about respect for women..this makes me laugh...The rape scenes have increased by the day and who's fault is it...t is not about women drinking or having fun. Are women getting raped in India bcuase of drinking...Come on wake up people. I think we need to make a documentary on Muthalik's life to see what a life did he lead when he was a teenager.

ironic by mathai on 28 Jan 2009

It is so amusing to see that the saviours of the Indian culture are all of them wearing the western outfit of pant and shirt. where is your mundu and kurta, oh indian men? or is it hard to beat up people in mundu.

Rama Sena by Jayaraman on 28 Jan 2009

Stop making any comparison between Sri Rama Sena and Taliban . Dont be led by psuedo secular ministers liike Renuka Chaudhary. Do make some visits to some Islamic countries and see the plight of women there. Our country has given enough freedom for all. But " Enough is Enough". These modern women are really spoiling the culture of this country. For every single issue be it entry into Sabari Mala Temple or Guruvayur temple, traditions are always not given respect and are spoken filithily. Will the same media dare to write about Comon civil code, 'Talak Talak Talak' etc. It is only the media responsible for the present day plight. The more you pounce on somebody, the more they get annoyed and finally one day they wil hit back at you. This is what the Rama sena has done. If this is really an issue , be brave to comment about the 500000 kashmiri pandits ethinically cleansed out of the valley and are living as refuges in their own country since 1989. 'Dont always Ape the West, O, Indians'

PIGGY BACK RIDING by ANILA on 28 Jan 2009

These fellows talk about Hinduism for their own benefits, without knowing the concept, for them they look at opportunities to enhance their image with a certain section of the populace to get a foothold on to more lucrative political carrers

Invoke MCOCA by Sunil Maingi on 28 Jan 2009

The cops have picked the instigator for a small cause, fine, but has he and his followers been booked under proper sections or as usual this is an eyewash. In my view, MCOCA should be invoked against such people. Such people are going about assaulting others and damaging property for self publicity and political gain. If we are soft on them then we will be guilty of creating Raj Thackeray's all over the country.

Slap Westernism by Ameen on 28 Jan 2009

This is not the most horrible act by the Parivar activist. Though women could have been spared and men would have been attacked so that they abstain from such acts. Do not follow Westernism, this is a total failure. We humans have some culture and we need to be in bound of it. Now the so called Western people are suffering from disharmony, distress and frustration. They have seen the world nude and being nude. Now they are searching peace in form of Social Service, Charity and Medications. Why follow all from them? First you have to believe they are the bunch of failures. Be in you limit guys. Everybody.

Media Bias by Sriram on 28 Jan 2009

When the Congress ministers in Goa go on a rape spree, where were the media, Renuka Madam ?When Ms Viswanathan was killed midnight in Delhi and Sheila made a comment that women should not be adventorous, where was everyone ?I am not saying that what Ram Sena did was entirely correct, but media is definitely being biased when it comes to hounding BJP.Where was the media when Sharia courts said talaq saved as SMS is equivalent to talaq given ? When a rapist in law is asked to marry the victim daughter in law ?All I am asking is, why this bias ?Mangaloreans, in the name of freedom and high society, if these girls start indulging in roadside amorous shows, how do you plan to react to that ?

The role of media by Kalluraya on 28 Jan 2009

It is intreguing how the media came to know of the incident beforehand and were ready with their cameras and crew as if they were shooting a movie. The media has to take half the blame for this episode. If Ramsena are a bunch of crooks what about the media men who watched and filmed the carnage as if it was a picnic?????

beating girls is not indian culture by Vinu on 28 Jan 2009

Beating girls also not Indian culture, Indian culture always respect women. If they need to stop pub culture, why they don’t strike against the pub owner. I think it is a business fight.

Cops pick up Ram Sena chief ‘for a small reason’ by siji on 28 Jan 2009

If this is a small reason, we have to wait till they kill some body, who the hell are they to touch a individual

However, he went on to add in a television interview before his arrest that "dancing in the nude and by Dr. Krishnasamy Rajendran on 28 Jan 2009

Why can't these people fight against the vulgar Indian movies of shamful exposure; the open temple prostitution; the rakkel / men keeping illegal second and third wives; the evil caste system; the dowry practices; the discrimination of male femal children and so many evils in the Hindu system, instead of targetting non issues. Very sad the same men who perpetuate these evils fight issues which are nothing. Shame on them

Bangalore Pubs needs SRS by Jeyant on 28 Jan 2009

It would be nice if Sri ram sena people can do similar things in Bangalore Pubs.. The obscenity and vulgarism shown by affluent girls and boys in Bangalore pubs is ugly

Bangalore Pubs needs SRS by Vikram on 28 Jan 2009

Wonderful thought. Then stop the UB Groups and KF group that manufactures and sells whole world. You are ready to manufacture and sell to other cities and use the tax and revenue from that , but can not bear the same happening in your city.

B'lore needs to ban SRS by Real Indian on 28 Jan 2009

Jayant , I respect your opinion ,but I think you need to respect the opinion of the pub-goers and stay at home and have a drink or go to a bar where there are only men allowed ,I mean c'mon man why do you want to go to a pub if you cant accept pub-culture.

ram sene by meeta on 28 Jan 2009

Way to go! karnataka was troubled by Veerappan for a long time but was succesful in killing him. This state has been progressive and has been very good at blending modernitu with tradition.organizations like Ram sene are the taliban of India, they can turn Karnataka into NWFP and SWAT of pakistan. Arrest them and do not release them for at least 6 months, show them videos of drone attacks and how the taliban are targeted, teach them some vocation and ensure they lead legitimate productive lives. The women in India can do better than be beaten into insecurity by self proclaimed moral police.

Pub by Amitabh Singh on 28 Jan 2009

Taking law into ones hand is wrong. But we are ignoring the real problem, is it correct youngster wasting their time in drinking. Law also say that liquor shall not be served to person below 25 years of age. We have the habit to ignore real issue and beat drum to provide publicity to law breaker.

Good Job finally by Pradeep on 28 Jan 2009

Glad sense previaled in the useless Karnataka Govt. finally. If these idiots do anything stupid on Valentine's day that should be the day they are termed Terrorists and taken under ant-terror act.

Hateful Religions by Desi Pundit on 28 Jan 2009

Ram Sena and other similar Hindu outfits are showing the true colors of an extermely intolerant religion. Contrary to the popular claim to tolerance by Hindus, Hindus are so intolerant that could not even tolerate other Hindus who were consequenly reduced to the status of untouchable. Now when these poor people change thier religion in an attempt to redeem their self esteem , they have to face the same hateful Hindus in the form of different "cultural" organizations. The perception that Hindus are tolerant is due to the fact that their British/Muslim rulers did not allow Hindu-hate to come to surface. Now the facade of Hindu tolerance is coming down and the real face of Hinduism is at least as ugly as that of Islam.

Chot si ghatna by Jas on 28 Jan 2009

Muthalik's perception of this event as "chotisi ghatna" prove how small brained this monkey is.

Sena Vs women by Padmasani on 28 Jan 2009

Who gave the Sene chief authority to speak for the women in India? If they worship women as mother and carry out such violent act one can only imagine how women will be treated if they are not worshiped? The sena chief really means what he says then he should first find an alternate livelihood for all the "Mothers" rotting in the Red Light Area. Let him first take care of that.
