Chandigarh, October 7 Around 24 policemen and private security guards had a narrow escape today after a bamboo structure meant for installation of a tent for the spectators collapsed. One person received minor injuries.

The incident took place this afternoon when the Indian Cricket team completed its session of net practice. Many police personnel and private security guards were sitting under the structure when it caved in.

For a while people inside the stadium remained confused as to what had happened. Later some of the officials were found hastily shifting an injured person from the stands.

The sudden collapse of the structure invited immediate attention of mediapersons present at the stadium. While the police tried to whisk away the media from the spot, officials maintained that the structure did not crumbled but they had removed it.

UT Chief Engineer V K Bhardwaj, who was also present in the ground before the incident, told Newsline that bamboo structure was being removed as the players and team management from both sides had raised objections.

“After finding the teams and managements objecting to the structure, we decided to remove it. The bamboo structure of not only the general stand but also from the VIP stand is being removed,” said Bhardwaj.
