Lucknow, May 14 The Uttar Pradesh government is likely to set up a corpus fund soon for the medical care of former legislators. This has been a long-standing demand of the former members of both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.

The corpus fund will benefit as many as 3,000 former MLAs and 183 former MLCs. The government will provide Rs 40 lakh for former MLAs and Rs 10 lakh for former MLCs.

“The money will be deposited with the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science, Lucknow. The cost of treatment for each former legislator will be paid by the state government,” said Rajendra Prasad Pandey, Principal Secretary, state Assembly.

“There is no cap on the expenditure of former legislators and the government would bear the entire expenditure as per the bills submitted by the SGPGI,” he added.

The sitting members of the both the Houses are entitled to a monthly medical allowance of Rs 6,000.

The Finance department has given its in-principle approval for the creation of the fund and the matter is likely to be placed before the Cabinet soon for its approval. Guidelines for the administration of the fund are being framed by the Assembly Secretariat.

It may be recalled that this proposal was first mooted during the previous Samajwadi Party regime in 2006. Entangled in procedural delays and red tape, the proposal got almost buried as the state plunged into the election mode in March 2007.

The former members of the both the Houses will be able to draw benefit of the corpus fund by the end of this year as a provision for the fund in the budget is yet to be made.

The financial provision for the fund is likely to be made in the first supplementary budget to be introduced in the next session of the state legislature likely to be summoned by the second week of September this year.
