Kolkata, July 31 Lack of coordination between the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and some of its borough offices seem to have led to confusion in the functioning of the wards.

A few councillors from south Kolkata recently expressed their unhappiness over the issue at a session of the House.

Ratna Sur, chairman of borough 13, said: “KMC’s operations have not been decentralised till date. Borough offices do not have any importance and are not taken into consideration while taking vital decisions. We do not even know what kind of development works are being carried out in our wards. If this prevails, we want the borough committees to be dissolved.”

He added: “A drainage project, worth Rs 3.5 crore, has been carried out in my borough without my information. I am also not aware of the multi-storeyed buildings coming up in my borough. Since I am answerable to the people, I should have been informed about the projects.”

Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, however, denied the allegations. “All decisions of the corporation are communicated to the borough offices. But certain decisions are changed in the borough offices, which should not happen,” he said.

“A committed was constituted to look into the problems faced by the borough committees. In accordance with the committee report, we will give special powers to the borough committees. We will also try to involve borough officers in the meetings,” Bhattacharya added.
