Kolkata, March 14 A pharmacist in North 24 Parganas has decided to adopt the new born girl child of a mentally-challenged woman, according to reports.

The pharmacist’s own 10-month-old girl had died due to a heart ailment two years ago.

According to locals, Gautam Chowdhury, owner of a pharmacy in Baspota village under the Gaighata Police Station, found the mentally-challenged woman about three months ago asking for medicines.

Chowdhury informed a local doctor, Nani Gopal Sarkar, who found the woman to be pregnant. “She spoke Hindi and could be a migrant from Bihar,” a local said.

On March 11, locals found the woman writhing in pain and informed the doctor. A few hours later, she delivered a baby girl.

Initially, the locals put up a tent for the mother and child but Chowdhury later took both of them home.

His wife, Supriti, said she would be glad to adopt the child. “We are overwhelmed. This is almost like a home-coming of our daughter,” Chowdhury said.
