State A-G to present policy on hawkers
A Division Bench of Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice Indira Banerjee today asked the state Advocate-General to present a formal policy on hawkers before April 18. In his plea, environmentalist Subhas Dutta said both the state government and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had failed to remove the hawkers. Responding, the counsel for the KMC raised the point that the civic body had taken steps to free the footpaths but the hawkers had returned time and again. Expressing displeasure, the Bench said the policy in this regard should be changed. The KMC counsel then argued that regulating the hawkers was not an easy task. The counsel for the state submitted before the Bench that the state government will announce its policy on hawkers after it is approved by the state Cabinet.
HC directs CU to show student his paper
The Calcutta High Court today granted permission to a student to see his answerscript under the Right To Information Act. Justice Sanjib Banerjee directed the Calcutta University to make the necessary arrangements to show BSc student Pritam Rooj his mathematics answerscript. The order was stayed for a fortnight after the varsity asked for some time. Rooj, a student of Presidency College, had filed a petition challenging the varsity's decision not to show him the answerscript. Rooj had secured 28 in that paper. After a review, his total went up by four marks. He then requested the university to show him his paper. Delivering the final order, Justice Banerjee said there was no law to prevent a student from seeing his answerscript and a student had the right to do so under Section 3 of the RTI Act.
Rehman case: Judge suggests video clippings be checked to verify cop’s statement
In the Rizwanur Rehman case today, Justice Dipankar Dutta suggested that the counsel for the police officers ask Doordarshan to provide video clippings of the press conference held by former Commissioner of Police Prasun Mukherjee after Rizwanur's death. "This will help ascertain what Mukherjee had actually said," he added. Mukherjee had reportedly stated that Rehman had committed suicide -- a fact being denied by his counsel, advocate Samaraditya Pal, now. Pal said he would reply soon to the Bench's suggestion. He added that Mukherjee's statement had been distorted by the media. Today, Pal moved a plea asking the court to hand over a copy of the CBI report to him. He said the police had the right to challenge the FIR and the report filed by the CBI. But they could not do so until the report was handed over to him. Pal also argued that the HC was not the right place to discuss the alleged intervention of the police officers in the married life of Rizwanur and Priyanka. Only undisputed facts could be discussed in this court, he added. The matter will come up for hearing next Tuesday.
