Lalgarh naxals

Lalgarh (WB) The battle for recapturing Lalgarh from Maoists began in right earnest on Thursday as the police and central forces today stormed the area smashing a human shield of tribal agitators with a barrage of teargas shells and lathi-charges.

A 600-strong mob of tribals armed with lathis, axes, spears, bows and arrows blocked the road when the security forces arrived and shouted at the police asking them to apologise for alleged atrocities, a PTI correspondent on the spot saw.

A police officer warned the tribals over microphone to disperse within two minutes, following which the armed police, the CRPF and the riot police lobbed a volley of teargas shells and made a lathi-charge dispersing the tribals under the banner of People's Committee Against Police Atrocities in 10 minutes.

The police then proceeded cautiously up the road to Pirrakula, eight km from Lalgarh, making house-to-house searches while people caught on the road were allowed to pass with their hands raised in the air.

The operation was then halted for the night, IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told PTI from Kolkata.

The police and central forces did not want to cross the Jhitka jungle beyond Pirrakula at night as it was a Maoist-dominated area.

inept west bengal government by Dalim Paul on 19 Jun 2009

West Bengal Govt is inept in handling difficult situations. The commies claim to be pro-poor but all they did in west bengal during the last 25 years is shout slogans and call for bundhs and blame everything on imperialists.

What is going on? by Kannan on 19 Jun 2009

Villager protecting Maoists ?!! What is going on their? What is their problem? Why no one has listened to their problem? I think those illiterate people got badly affected and they don’t know how to deal with their problem. The state govt. must be blamed for not reaching out for these people. Govt. need work on this problem before it is too late.

jlt by moloy on 19 Jun 2009

maoist presence is basically reflection indian political class (CPM specially included) to impart basic justice and human rights to poorer sections of society. CPM has forgotten that it came to power to give voice to totalitarian state by congress. it itself has morphed into same state-corruption, inefficiency, brutality, greed, yes it can now call itself safely as national party. bihar, chattisgarh, andhra, orissa, WB, UP, MP these states are experiencing social injustice. people themselves have allowed corruption, the parties are reflection of the same. the system has to be replaced. days of cpm are dwindling fast. a suggestion for them, you are now spent force. just disappear quietly to avoid extinction

Problem is more big than it looks from outside by Kamal on 19 Jun 2009

I think Maoist problem is much deeper than it looks from outside. 3000 normal Villagers coming out in support of Maoist is not normal. Communist party /Ideology should be banned in India.

who is at fault by vishal on 18 Jun 2009

The tribals are protesting against police brutality. Now we all know how Indian police behaves in the cities where people are educated and carry relatively more influence. I can just imagine how the police must behave with the poor disenfranchised tribals. What terrible exploitation and abuse they must be going through in the hands of the contemptible Indian Police. But yes. Violence is not the solution. Unfortunately a bunch of uneducated, agrieved tribal men don't know any better. You don't really expect them to see the finer points of peaceful democratic means of protests. Do you ? They are pissed and they are lashing out the only way they know how. CRPF, Paramilitary, Tear gas, Lathi charge is all great to control and defuse the immediate crisis. But once this is done, shouldn't some minister or some District magistrate or somebody try to figure out what HIS people - yes all these are OUR people - so angry about ?

Leaders should learn to accept responsibility. by CK Raju, Thrissur on 18 Jun 2009

Playing with a double-edged sword of industrialisation, this is what happens in the end. The shattered dreams of jobs will drive the elites away from the party; and most importantly, the poorest of poor people will abandon the party for fear of forced de-possessment of their homeland by none other than the same party that they voted to power. CPM, as a party, is facing the biggest crisis in the subcontinent, having no one other than its ignorant neoliberal leaders to blame for their misadventure with governance mechanisms, that too, against a set of people widely appreciated and admired the world over, for their historical geneology of displaying rare affinity towards leftist ideologies.

MAOIST AND TRIBALS by kim on 18 Jun 2009

IN WB BOTH MAMTA`S TMC AND CPM SHOULD BE BANNED,ASSEMBLY DISSOLVED AND NO ELECTIONS TO BE CARRIED OUT TILL CALM PREVAILS EVEN IF TAKES A DECADE,MAMTA IS ALSO A TERRORIST LIKE COMMUNISTS,SHE IS AN OLD CRONY OF SANJAY GANDHI THE HALF BREED CRAZY NEHRU DYNASTY GOONDA.SHE SHOULD BE ALSO EXPELLED FROM PARLIAMENT.

So much ingnorate and hatred by Natarajan on 18 Jun 2009

I see so much ingnorance and hatred against our tribal population. One guy here is asking to kill them all. Someone is calling them traitors. Maoists are not traitors. Mao called for a violent revolution by the oppressed class to assert their rights and make their voice heard. This is what the naxals are doing. In WB, police is nothng but an arm of CPM. CPM pays lip service to upliftment of poor/muslims etc. It is filled with brahmins who chant marxism to keep themselves in power.

Clean up the mess. by Satish on 18 Jun 2009

Tell people who are struck in the affected area to come to safe area, if they are not coming, go heavly on them and clean up the mess. Dont' drag it like what they had done in Mumbai attack. Use suphisticated arms and clean up...... This should be the lesson for future, who dares to hold up the area....

As you sow, so you reap! by Mahesh on 18 Jun 2009

Classic case of reaping the rewards of being a communist - communists have always acted against the interests of a free society - they are simply egoistic traitors and dacoits who in the name of helping te labour class live on them and their miseries like parasites - and ensure there is no development what so ever. We saw how they acted when the nuclear deal was being signed in India's energy interests. Now a secition of the very same group in a different garb is doing this sabotage.

WHO IS ARMING THE MAOISTS? by Ajit on 18 Jun 2009

National Conspiracy of Silence! by A Gokak on 18 Jun 2009

Naturally, this is not pro-majority Gujarat, or why would they have kept quiet through all the years, huh? The activists, the ngos, human rights, the amnesty people, the overactive media loose canons -- what did it take for IE to break the code of silence, is the million dollar question? Can the CPM honchos be dragged to an impartial arena like The Hague international court of justice? Shame, Shame!
