Unlike south Delhi in the biker-gang case, the crime area this time was east Delhi.
In the first incident, one Mohammed Abid (22), son of a local businessman was shot at while heading out on his motorbike around 10.30 pm Tuesday, the police said. The incident was reported from Welcome Colony, in northeast district, when the victim was barely half-a-kilometre from his house.
“Abid was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital; doctors there found a bullet in his head,” a senior police official said. “He has undergone surgery but his condition is still stated to be critical.” Police said initial investigations points towards a case of personal enmity. They said Abid had had a row with a tea vendor in his locality some time ago, and the police are investigating whether that incident has anything to do with the attack.
The police have taken the tea vendor into custody for questioning, but officials refused to divulge his name.
“Abid’s father Shakeel told us that the youth left the house around 10.30 pm; he did not tell where he was going. Shakeel said his son has no enemies and that he does not suspect anyone,” the officer said.
Abid is doing a computer course from a private institute; his father owns a wheat flour shop and also runs a tea and snacks store near the family house in Welcome.
In the second incident, a 26-year-old man was injured — around the same time as Abid on Tuesday night — when a “stray” bullet hit his knee in Seelampur. Police officials said the victim, one Javed, was also admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. His condition is stated to be stable.
Police said Javed is a resident of Sarai Rohilla and had come to Seelampur to visit his aunt.
“Javed was on his way to Zafarabad along with his nephew, Muzahid (22), when they suddenly heard a noise, a police officer said. “Muzahid says the next thing he knew, Javed was hit on his knee — it was a bullet wound.”
Armed men rob shop
Four unidentified armed men came on motorcycles and robbed two shops in east Delhi’s Preet Vihar at 8.10 pm on Wednesday. Police said the foursome held the shopkeepers at gunpoint and fled with Rs 35,000 cash.
They first targeted Fmaxo Drycleaners, owned by Swatantra Goyal, downed the shutters and held Goyal at gunpoint; they took away Rs 20,000 cash from the shop. The men then got in the next shop, Srikrishna General Stores owned by Goyal’s cousin Pankaj Sachdeva. This time they did not even bother to close the shutters; held the owner at gunpoint and took away Rs 15,000.
Witnesses have told police that they tried stepping into the adjacent shop — Srikrishna Medical Store too but gave up after seeing a few customers in there.
…Meanwhile, Rs 2.5 lakh reward for biker-gang info
Delhi Police on Wednesday announced a collective reward of Rs 2.5 lakhs for any information that leads to the arrest of the five-member biker gang allegedly involved in four incidents of shootings in south Delhi last week.
Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal announced a reward of Rs.50,000 each for the five suspects, identified as Om Prakash (30), Rajesh Sharma (28), Nasir (28), Mohammed Israel (28), and Shivam.
According to police, they have enough evidence against the identified accused to prove their involvement in the four recent shooting incidents. “We have released their sketches and have appealed the general public to give any information they have, through which we could arrest them,” Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
Earlier, the south district police had declared a reward of Rs 25,000 for any information leading to the gang’s arrest.
Police officers have said that the gang first struck on July 5, when they allegedly gunned down a property dealer, Sonu (25), outside his Sangam Vihar house. Bunty, accused in 27 cases of robbery and theft, was Sonu’s business partner and is the main suspect.
