Mumbai, February 4: Amitabh Bachchan's home was targeted by vandals in the backdrop of Raj Thackeray questioning the star's loyalties to Maharashtra while the Navnirman Sena leader on Monday faced charges of encouraging attacks on North Indians in the state.

A day after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists clashed with Samajwadi party workers, attacked two theatres screening Bhojpuri films and assaulted north Indian taxi drivers and vendors, the Centre asked the state government to tackle the situation in all seriousness and take proper steps to maintain law and order.

After the war of words between Thackeray and Samajwadi MP Jaya Bachchan, who came to the defence of her husband, two motor-cycle borne youths threw glass bottles at Amitabh's 'Prateeksha' residence in Juhu late last night.

Amitabh, who was shooting in Jaipur, refused to comment but security at his two homes in Mumbai was stepped up.

Mumbai was also put on high alert and the situation was peaceful with no fresh incidents of violence being reported.

Samajwadi party general secretary Amar Singh adopted a two-pronged offensive against MNS chief Raj Thackeray. Singh first lodged an FIR against Thackeray in the wee hours on Monday accusing him of encouraging attacks on North Indians.

Later, Singh through his lawyer Pradeep Rai petitioned the Election Commission in Delhi demanding that MNS be de-recognised and barred from contesting elections since its leader ‘does not believe in Indian constitution.’

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said stern action would be taken against the guilty because the violence should not spread. "There will be full protection for those living in Mumbai."

Uttar Pradesh Chief minister Mayawati condemned the Mumbai violence while effigies of Raj Thackeray were burnt in Patna and Kolkata by angry protestors.

It's so shameful that we are fighting among ourselves.yeserday one American asked me why all these things are happening. Seriously I felt ashemed to tell him that we r fighting among ourselves.who is suffering in this, the poor taxi drivers and daily wages earner. you should think over the matter, a pregnent woman forced to deliver her baby in a dirty railway compartment toilet. But the pathetic part is tomorow this guy will rule our country.I think we were much better position under british colonel. Can i be proud of being Inidan? but i really want to be.

RajThakere, a political goon! by Raju on 05 Feb 2008

Raj Thakre should be arrested for inciting violance and place in jail. Not only that he should hold responsible for damages caused by his goons. It is beyond any good citizen what we show on the TV. A goon with sword damaging taxi and other beating drirver. Mr. Thakare should know that though he has fundamental rights to speak his mind, he don't have right to promote violance as he is aware of the fact that his mindless followers is going to act and he is responsible. The way his organzarion man pulled out sword from jacket and rehide it.

Stop it now, their is a limit to everything. Policemen atleast get up now? we will pay you brobe if thats all you need to stop these stuff by Dharmendra Ajwani on 04 Feb 2008

Did we win freedom? or still we need to fight against evil? Last time it was non Indians with whom we fought for freedom and this time its Raj. This ministers just play games and innocent have to pay the cost. Rajs' men have beaten innocent common men. Do they think they did a real MARAta thing or it was just Gundagardi? Our police men are good to just take money and go to sleep. Are we safe? I don't go with Raj nor with any Bacchans, i need my Indian brothers to be safe. If Bacchans and Raj have gurds plz have a fight face to face not kill common men. else once common men starts and stands up we will throw both Thekereys and Bacchans out of Maharashtra. Let us leave in peace.

Too much noise out of nothing by Satya on 04 Feb 2008

Amitabh Bacchan seems a mature and dignified person, but not his wife. Her questioning who is Raj Thekerey is just an insult to the injury in Maratha pride. I am not a Marathi, but totally support Marathis view of loyalty. If one lives in Asom, he/she must be loyal to Asom, similarly if one lives in Maharastra he/she must be loyal to Maharastra. If not, why Govt on India ask NRIs to be loyal to the country they live? All double standards. This issue is made a molehill out on nothing by the SP and Amar Singh. Amitabh Bacchan must disassociate from SP and Amar Singh type persons to keep alive his dignity and respect.

Divide by Raj on 05 Feb 2008

People like you give steam to divisive forces. My dear friend, we should be loyal to India first. You are saying that let's sacrifice India for the sake of regionalism. I find no difference in Raj Thakre of Maharastra, ULFA in Assam or Militants in Kashmir. If Maharastrians attack Norh-Indians in Maharastra, do you think it would stop there

Raj Thakare by Raju on 05 Feb 2008

Sir, I place my opinion before I read yours. What do you mean by loylty the the state one live in? Is it disloyal to celebrate your religious belief? Mr. Bachhan is born in UP, his roots are in UP, what is wrong if he become brand ambessador for UP? What good name Raj Thakre is giving to Maharashtra? And by the way what is contribution of Raj Thakre?

Gundagardi by Raj's goons by Hemanth on 04 Feb 2008

Staya You seem tolack common sense. How does attacking Big Bs house reflect maratha pride? Jai Hind is more important and supremem than Jai maharasthra. If Rak T is so concerned about a school in mumbai why doesnt he organize funds to buiild one or take up Jaya offer and get her land so they can build another school. regardless of where they build the school as long as they doing in Inida it is a good thing.

Who is so-called Big B? by Satya on 04 Feb 2008

Why people with commonsense barking like street dogs? There are so many attacks on so many peoples houses across the nation. Someone thrown two bottles, and thats make huge noise. Who is that so-called Big B? Is he a superhuman, came from another planet to get special treatment here? Where hides these pseudo-seculars when MF Hussain paint Hindu deva-devis and Bharat mata vulgur way? That is secualrism and saying people to be loyal to the place he/she lives is unsecular. I shall kicked out every outsiders from my province if they are not loyal to the province. Thats it.

Missing the point by mumbaikar on 05 Feb 2008

It doesnt matter who said what? What matters is the basic rights of the citizens of india - to work where ever they want, donate or develop schools or projects wherever they can.Who is this guy to question Amitabh's loyalty? Looks like he is looking for his 15 mins of fame.Whats appalling is people (or should I say sheeps) take him seriously and make it an issue worthing of causing harm and violence. What has this country come down to? We want all the foreign money for curing HIV/AIDS but we should not give anything to other underdeveloped places.Whats a crock of %$#$?
