Recalling the Sino-India war in 1962, the Dalai Lama told reporters here that the People's Liberation Army of China had occupied Tawang and nearly reached Bom Dila that year.
"But the then Chinese Government declared a unilateral ceasefire and withdrew (its forces). Now the Chinese have got different views. This is something which I really don't know. I am little bit surprised," he said in an apparent reference to Chinese claims over Tawang.
On Chinese opposition to his visit, the 74-year-old Dalai Lama said, "That is quiet usual. Wherever I go they protest. It is totally baseless. The Chinese Communists turn quite sad usually on my every movement. Of course my visit here is non-political."
On his visit here, he said he was getting "emotional" as he had crossed this town in 1959 while fleeing from Tibet.
"I get emotional. When I escaped I had mental stress and anxiety. I had feeling of hopelessness. But the moment I saw (Krishna) Menon and other MEA officials on the border then I had a feeling of reunion and safe," the Dalai Lama said.
"So, now I am very happy to be here. My main aim of the visit is promotion of human values wherever I go. Just now I returned from Japan where I explained that the ultimate source of happiness of life is within ourselves," he said.
Asked whether he had any message for China, he said, "nothing, no, nothing."
The Dalai Lama said the Tibet Buddhist religion and the culture are passing through a difficult period.
"So for preservation of Tibetan Buddhism and culture in this country and in this area the people have the real responsibility. Many people, particularly young, belonging to the Tibetan refugee community are joining monastery and various Tibetan institutions which is a very hopeful sign," he said.
The Dalai Lama said, particularly in south India 2,000 such community members have joined the institutions and the local people are showing genuine interest to study Buddhism and preserve its culture.

Now I think chaina realise that there in GOD POWER AND that if they try to hasel TIBAT RELIGIOUS PEOPLE. The CHINA will disappear from the map. They must have seen How much disater had struck them last year. So becareful China.LIVE AND LET LEAVE PEOPLE IN PEACE AND HARMONEY.
The Chinise is always claming its territories as its own be it Arunachal P,Sikkim,Lhadak,Tibet etc.Wherever there is majority with the faith of Tibetian Buddhist China is bound to claim these territory. One day it may point out Bhutan which is its own and under the UNO,for an example. The Communist are very cold hearted and the world should pressurize this brute regime.
China is a brutal totalitarian state and China is also in no position to take on India militarily, thus let them howl. His Holiness is a man of God is respected worldwide.
The Chinese Government is behaving like stray dogs that bark at everything. Treat thsi behaviour with the contempt it deserves: Just ignore them.
"Dalai Lama surprised over Chinese claims on Tawang" and whole world is surprised that China claim countries north and west of great wall of China which is the borders of China all other countries, Tibet, Sinkiang, Inner Mongolia etc, are illegally occupied by neo-colonialist China. But no empire lasts for ever, China's demise is assured.
Conversion is last on Dalai Lama's mind. You should know that India is not 100% Hindus and certainly Tawang and Arunachal is Buddhist majority state. He is no teaching in Hindu belt. Moreover, we advices people not convert from their ancestral religion whether its Hindu, Buddhist, Christian or what so ever as it may lead to confusion. He is not one of those guru bent on converting others. For him moral values matters than chanting hyms or prayers or any rituals.
His Holiness is correct. Chinese suffer from dilusions and bark a lot. They can not even take on Taiwan, let alone India. In 1979 the Chinese were battered by the Vietnamese. India must ignore the brutal Chinese till they become democratic. Let us have peace with the Chinese but be ready for war if the Chinese do not desire peace.
We have to claim Tibet. our ancient Kings ruled tibet once. we should strongly claim tibet and make it as an autonomous state of India and ask Dalai Lama to settle in his home. Our holy Kailash and manas we can go without passport. once george fernandas told china is our main enemy. at that time people rediculed him. now see. we have to make all out efforts to spoil china from bulldosing india. they make cheap products (medicines etc.,) and export to other countries with label 'made in india'.they joined hands with pakistan already. enemys friend is our enemy. we have to join with russia full steam. chinese already intruded nepal thro maosists. down south in srilanka they are growing like cancer. now they are being sighted near tamilnadu in seas.GOD. anybody watching?
Can India shot a missile from New Delhi to Arunachal & China border? No. If there is no road transport, landing ground and other infrastructures in the border area how Indian can prepare war with China. In Arunachal even 30% of rural area is not connected with road, but China has connected 76% to rural villages in HIGHWAY Road, they have built along the border by SUPER HIGHWAY not simple highway which is just 10 km from LAC. They have a airport 10km from LAC. If you want to know more, you should personally talk to me. I am border area dweller of Arunachal. We have been waiting a development from Indian side since 3,4 decades but no connectivity still. To go to Itanagar capital of Arunachal it takes 100 hours but go to Nyingchi is just 15 hours. More development is towards north side, why should always be in the darkness for development from India?
Indian Govt should have allowed foreign journalists to cover Dalai Lama's visit to Arunachal Pradesh. Dalai Lama is a holy man and Arunachala Pradesh is the sacred territory of India. China is our enemy; ban Chinese cheap imports; buy Korean,Vietnamese, Thai and Taiwanese products and get ready for a border war with China. CHINA WILL ALWAYS BE OUR ENEMY!!!
Foreign journalists should have allowed to cover Dalai's visit, but look who is the PM (he has permanent cringe) and who has remote control (European playing US and Vatican game). We are surprised that Dalai was allowed to visit Tawang when appointed 'PM' didn't have the guts to go there.
Your risible and oft repeated bilge against Vatican only reflects your moral and intellectual vacuity. In what sense is Vatican said to influence Indian policy? If what you say is indeed true, then it reflects the ascendancy of moral values in Rome in contrast to the decline of the Indian culture and values.
There is no doubt that China is a great country. It has so many contribution to the human civilisation. Unfortunately this great neighbour of ours has been facing great turmoil. The mainland is devoid of democracy and as such basic humanism. The spirit of China rest only in Taiwan. Under the tyrant communist rule, the mainland has adopted a neo-imperialist policy. The communist caucus has spread its tentacles to Tibet, East Turkestan and Inner Mongolia. The world is overawed by the might of the communist caucus. This caucus is apprehensive of India. It expects internal turmoil, albeit the USSR way, if India succeeds with her democratic means. This rule is directly responsible for nuclearizing a rouge state like Pakistan and bloodshed in the Indian Sub Continent. We should be watchful of communist rule everywhere.
The chinese governments strong objection of the visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's to Arunachal has to be taken very seriously, by the government of India. First they objected to the Presidents visit, then the Prime Ministers, and now His Holiness's. Government of India, has to strongly object to the Chinese government at the highest level, with the strongest words. Never forget, the increasing military might of India, and its ever increasing economical might arent second to none....China and India are equal partners in every field, and hence Indians will not tolerate any interferences ,like these dubious ones that relate to the territorial sovereignty of the Republic of India.
I am admirer of Dalai lama. i have visited Holy Kailash in tibet. BUT Dalai lama should teach buddism only to his discipiles. He should not try to teach, convert others (Hindus) to Buddism. He should know his position and should think how hindus respect him. let him not spoil that by his actions. Hope others - in position- explain this to him.
Hey sundar, having beautiful name,Sundar, why you come-up with foolish unholy ideas/thoughts!Dalai Lama is not missionary going around to convert people. His preaching is not only for Budhists but for all humanity. What a foolish person you can be to tell/suggest a person like him for he should do and what not!Hindus not only respect him but love and adore him equally the way they do to other seers, saints and virtuous persons.Remember, irrespective of supreficial differences among Hindu interdenominations;Budhists,Jains and Sikhs they are one.If a Hindu is more inclined to Budhism is most welcome and its vice-versa.He doesn't need to be explained by anyone for he is explained by Almighty.
'Sundar' I am pleasantly surprised by your concern to Hinduism. Plesae direct such thought to real enemies of hinduism, the Jihadi Islam and western funded christian evengelist subversives. Just see how nicely all nexal/maoist tribal areas are hot beds of conversion also! About Budddhism, Jainism or Sikhism don't worry they are part of sanatana dharma and conversion to any of these religions will not change the basic peaceful character of India, unlike other cults which preach intolerance to other belief systems!
To show China it's place, India should set up a Dharmashala there and Dali Lama might be facilitated to visit it as often as he chooses to and spend time there.
Even if Dalai Lama's visit is political, he's welcome in Arunachal. Even if China's visit is non-political, China is not welcome in Arunachal. China should be asked to vacate their Hun population from Tibet and stop imposing Mandarin. Arunachalese who look upto China doesn't know how they will be subjugated by Mandarin speaking Huns. Long live, India.
