Kolkata, May 26 The strike called by the students of Calcutta Medical College Hospital continued for the third day, even as patients admitted in the hospital continued to be at the receiving end.

The talks between students supported by the Medical College Democratic Students’ Association (MCDSA) and the college administration broke down on Monday after the authorities refused to accept the demands of the students.

The students have put forth three demands that include allowing 14 inmates of the main hostel to stay there, withdrawal of police complaint against four students and the repeal of the hostel evacuation order.

As the strike has continued, a huge contingent of policemen is placed inside the hospital to prevent any untoward incident.

On May 23 night, a clash had broken out between the SFI and the MCDSA. The SFI members allegedly forced MCDSA supporters to leave the main hostel.

Four boarders were beaten up by the SFI goons and one of them, Priyabrata Seth, is in a critical condition.

The college authorities had allegedly lodged police complaint against the MCDSA students and asked them to vacate the hostel.

Thereafter, the students refused to work in the hospital and some of them went on a hunger strike.

Although the senior doctors have taken charge of the hospital, functioning of various departments, including the orthopedics, cardiology and pediatrics was affected.

Long queues were witnessed at the Out Patient Department (OPDs), which is visited by nearly 2,000 patients everyday.
