On Wednesday, The Indian Express traced many of the families, primarily Dalits (Valmikis) who were given cheques worth Rs 10,000-17,000 as relief. The delivery of these cheques, said the recipients, started in mid-December and many beneficiaries encashed them just before the model code came into effect on December 24.
What has now become a talking point is the timing of the cheques’ distribution and their alleged “selective distribution”. Those watching the events closely feel that “a nervous Badal government is pulling out all stops” to retain this seat for Badal Senior.
