"It is really bad that when the dream rail has reached border district Baramulla, the state government has failed to build good approach roads to 13 stations," said Hamid Ahmed, a resident of south Kashmir's Anatnag district. "The approach roads to all the railway stations are muddy and it speaks how the government officials take the issue seriously on prestigious projects."
Even as UPA chairperson will inaugurate the second phase of train in valley on Saturday, the residents will be able to travel from Baramulla to Anantnag, a distance of 101 kilometers on February 15. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had flagged off Kashmir's first train on October 11 and since than none of the approach roads to the 13 railway stations has been macadamized.
The Baramulla Anantnag train will pass through 13 railway stations which include Budgam, Nowgam, Pampore, Kakapora, Awantipora, Panzgam, Bijbehara, Anatnag, Mazgam, Sopore, Hamre, Pattan and Baramulla.
Sources said the approach roads to the railway stations were to macadamized by the state government Roads and Building department. The railways had, in fact, allotted the state agency the approach roads after acquiring the land from farmers and despite that the departments has failed to construct the worthy roads.
Sources said that the Roads and Buildings department was working at a snails face and there looked no emergency for completion of these approach roads.
But a senior official in the Roads and Building said that they were on the job and they have made all the roads to these stations motor-able. "Despite winter our department worked to make the road motor-able," he said, adding that the land for the approach was handed over to them very late by the Northern Railways.
