Defiant Jamaat says not concerned by UNSC ban

Islamabad Branded a terrorist outfit by the UN, Jamaat-ud-Dawah sought to put up a defiant stance, claiming that it was not concerned by the international clampdown and would carry on with its activities.

Reacting to the ban imposed by the UN Securtiy Council by a unanimous decision, Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi, chief of the Jamaat in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, said, "We don't take permission from the UN or the Security Council for carrying out our activities".

He claimed his group was not involved in the Mumbai carnage but said his organisation would admit its mistakes provided it was proved that it was in any way linked to the attacks, which left a trail of death and destruction.

"We are not concerned by restrictions imposed by the UN. We don't take permission from the UN or the Security Council for carrying out our activities," Alvi said hours after Security Council proscribed the Jamaat, a front for the LeT.

Four top leaders of LeT, including its founder Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, have also been labelled as terrorists subject to sanctions.

Alvi repeatedly said the Jamaat was "not concerned" about the UN restrictions, which he claimed were imposed without evidence.

"We are saddened by the Mumbai attacks but we are not involved in such acts which lead to the murder of innocent people," he told Geo News channel.

"Our country is a member of the UN and if there are restrictions and if they act according to the law, then it's alright. If it is proved that we have done anything, we will admit it," he added. Referring to the links between the Jamaat and and the LeT, Alvi said "there was a time when everyone had links with the LeT". These links helped the LeT to establish itself in Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

Alvi also claimed the Jamaat was in existence before a ban was imposed on the LeT by the Pakistan government in 2001.

At present, the Jamaat did not have any links with the LeT, he said, claiming the Lashkar had no camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Referring to Sunday's operation by security forces near Muzaffarabad that resulted in the capture of LeT operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai attacks, Alvi claimed the troops had raided a madrassa.

Alvi also said he did not know who was arrested during the operation.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said top LeT terrorist Lakhvi and Zarar Shah, a communications expert, were among those arrested during the crackdown.

Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar has said Jaish-e-Mohammed founder Maulana Masood Azhar too has been detained.

Pakistan has pledged to act if the UN designates the Jamaat-ud-Dawah a terrorist organisation.

The Jamaat was formed by Hafiz Mohammed Saeed after the Let was banned by the Pakistan government following the attack on India's parliament.

Speaking to Geo News before the UN Security Council imposed restrictions on the Jamaat, Hafiz Mohammed Saeed said the allegations levelled by India against his group at the UN were "baseless and unfounded".

Indira and pakistan and cry babu Bhutto by Mahesh Naik on 11 Dec 2008

That was a very wise move by her. What would we done with all those lazy, good for nothing pakistanis ?.

No, I do not miss her at all! by Narayan Nair on 11 Dec 2008

Friends , let us introspect and not get carried away. I personally do not miss Indira Gandhi at all. Although her war against Pakistan in 1971 was a well organised affair, she did it mostly for personal popularity which is shown by the fact that she promptly had Elections declared after the war. And pray, what is the net benefit we have had after getting Bangla Desh "liberated"? it has become a second home for terrorists. In fact, the 1971 war generated a bigger-than-life image for Indira which finally landed us in the notorious and despicable emergency rule of 1975, which put the clock back for India by several yaers.

Congress leaders spineless by sur pars on 11 Dec 2008

Congress and all its leaders have been bad for India such as Nehru,Indira,Sonia etc.At least Indira had some guts wgen our troops reached Lahore but her softheartedness in recalling them back to save a crying Ali Bhutto wasted lives of our jawans. If only then she could have forced Bhutto to sign on the blank line of surrender.

I miss Indira Gandhi and India has no backbone by Narayan on 11 Dec 2008

We have been told often that India is an economic super power and that we are a technologically advanced nation. But in reality, due to political compulsions, we cannot even clear the mess inside our own Nation. How do you expect some one else to do the dirty job for you. As long as we remain without backbone, they will attack you and ask you for proof. We are still discussing options and of course there is no guarantee that any one option will give us total freedom. Our PM can at best be a Finance Minister and he may not be able to provide the required leadership to take this country out of this blackmail. Pakistan is not going to act and China will see to it that Pakistan is engaged in this brinkmanship as for them only US is their equivalence. Both China and Pakistan will keep this pressure ON. Mark my word. You wake up in 2020 and you will see the same headlines. We will never get another leader like Indira Gandhi.

Durga mata Indira by chanakya on 11 Dec 2008

People who talk against Indira are the ones who are not born at that time. Else how do you forget so many hurdles she crossed to Put India back on rail.Food shortage, Chinese menance, Pakistan creation Khalistan and so many other things apart from drought and floods. If only these critics were there and remember how west used to make mockery at us.

You remember Mrs. Indira Gandhi? by Pankaj Verma on 11 Dec 2008

I am rather surprised that Mrs. Indira Gandhi's name has come up as someone who would fight terror. She was the sole dictator PM and was responsible for creating the first terrorist Sant Bhindranwale here in India. How many knew what was terrorism before that?Though Congress always harps about the Gandhi (Fake) Family's supreme sacrifices, common Indians are making larger sacrifices for the nation everyday. Only thing, they don't get to live on nation's cost and pay for themselves and their imcompetent leaders. It's a shame to be an Indian and remember Indira Gandhi.

i miss Indira... by P.VENKATASUBRAMANIAN on 11 Dec 2008

I do not understand this craving for Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It is because of the dis-memberment of Pakistan that we are in such a mess. India helped create Bangladesh, but Bangladesh is also hostile to India and exports militancy in North eastern states. So do not clamour for such destructive bravado.

Export / Import by Narayan on 11 Dec 2008

I agree that these guys are exporting terrorism. But why are you importing them? Indira is a Symbol of our courage and I certainly not agree with all that she has done. She was a patriot and we need leaders who care for the Nation and not for vote.
