New Delhi, January 2 To make police stations more accessible to the public, the Delhi Police has decided to re-draw the jurisdiction map of the Capital.

Setting himself the task of defining boundaries, Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal said, “I have noticed that the boundaries of our police stations have not been charted properly. For example, a large portion of Chandni Chowk market comes under Kotwali Police Station, even though the market is closer to the Chandni Chowk Police Station.”

This problem is prominent in east Delhi. For example, a major portion of Dilshad Garden area comes under Seema Puri Police Station. So is the case with Kalyan Puri and Mayur Vihar Police Stations.

There have been several incidents where the police station staff has reacted late to a crime as it is busy fighting with other police station over jurisdiction. “In several cases, the road comes under one police station, while the pavement falls under different police station. So if a body is found on the pavement but its hand is dangling on the road, the police stations try to pass the case to the each other,” a senior police officer said. Recently, when an unidentified beggar was killed by a Blueline bus at Ranjeet Singh flyover, both Connaught Place and Tilak Marg Police Stations argued over the incident. The case was finally handed over to Tilak Marg Police Station.

The Commissioner said re-drawing this map will ensure more practical use of the police force. Within six months of his appointment as the Commissioner, Dadwal carved out the outer district. The proposal for the outer district had been in pipeline for a long time. Six police stations were also inaugurated under his regime.

“There is also a lot of disparity in crime load of each police station. While in a few police stations over 1,000 cases are registered, in the neighbouring one the figure does not go beyond 200-300. We will ensure that the area is uniformly distributed,” Dadwal said. As part of his 'delimitation programme', Dadwal had also scrapped 27 police posts.
