New Delhi, January 31: The BJP-dominated MCD termed the Centre's decision to suspend sealing and demolition drives in Delhi till December 31 as a ‘political stunt’ and demanded a one-time amnesty scheme for regularising illegal structures.

"The Centre's notification was a clear cut political stunt done with an eye on the Delhi Assembly elections," MCD Leader of the House Subhash Arya said.

He alleged the Congress Government was adopting delaying tactics to come up with an amnesty scheme.

The Centre issued directions to the concerned local authorities in the capital to suspend sealing and demolition of structures that came up before December, 2006.

The direction by the Union Urban Development Ministry came in the wake of the action by the MCD and the DDA against encroachment and unauthorised construction following court orders.

The relief, which will be available till December 31, 2008, will result in suspension of the ongoing demolition of illegal fourth and fifth floors of residential buildings.

An election-oriented stunt !! by Sharad C. Misra on 02 Feb 2008

How could the Centre take such a unilateral decision which amounts to contempt of the Supreme Court. It is certain that these would be a barrage of PILs against this decision and the chances are that the enforcement of the Centre's notification would be stayed by the Supreme Court. Even a fool woulds know that the suspension of sealing operations is an election-oriented stunt.

That's true.

demolition stopped by S Joshi on 01 Feb 2008

It is a shame, that illegal construction is protected by the government who has passed the law regarding the construction. The government, the party appears to be stooping too low,but this will be an example in other areas of life too. Very soon legal actions, and law abiding citizens would be rethinking about their status in the country. The party may want demolitions to be stopped for the votes, but the government cannot,as it is not the government of those who indulged in illegal construction, it is the government of all those also, who are law abiding and sincere in obeying the law. This is a doom's day for those who are in power and prostrate before the criminals. Shame Shame, shame.

Are our politicians interested in making this nation a lawless one? It is high time we teach our traders to carry out their trade in a corporate way instead of struggling to upkeep their individual businesses. Then only pressure on land decreases. What we are doing now would not benefit our nation in any way.
