Like Uttam, there were other winners when the annual Venu Menon Animal Awards were given away by Member of Parliament and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi on Tuesday.
The awards are organised by the Wildlife Trusts of India and the Venu Menon Animal Allies Foundation. While Saumya, a 12-year-old Class VI student of St Mary’s School, got the young achiever award, the other winners were the Tibetan Community of Amrawati, Andhra Pradesh (Lifetime Achievement); Charitable Trust Shree Vardhman Jeevdaya Kendra, which gives shelter and medical help to animals in Kutch (Special Organisations award); Urmila Ganguly, who has worked for the cause of the Indian dolphin and bears (Animal Allies Award); Kerala-based Tribal Tracker Development Committee (David Shephard Award); Bunyar forest guard Abdul Qayuoom Khan (Van Rakshak Award); IPS Bijay Kumar Sharma (Endangered Species Award); Maharashtra wildlife warden Baban Prabhakar Shakhalikar (Jury Special Award); and Kolkata-based Tuhina Kahali (Animal Action Award).
“I haven’t opened my cash prize yet. But I’m going to buy more colours with it and make more paintings. My award-winning painting was made at home. It shows a forest fire and people helping the animals, giving them first aid. I wanted to show that animals too are important too,” said 12-year-old.
