Delhi’s ‘trade’mark: Business in the Capital

16 Delhi’s ranking with respect to the number of establishments, contributing about 1.80 per cent of the total.

Newsline brings you a thumbnail view of the trade establishments in the Capital, which boasts of being the hub of trading activities in the country, “retail trade” being the “most dominant economic activity group”

* The total number of establishments found to be operating during 2005 in the geographical boundaries of NCT stood at 75,7743.

* Out of them, 75,4453 (99.57 per cent) establishments were non-agricultural and rest of the 3,290 (0.43 per cent) were agricultural in nature.

* The number of establishments has registered a growth rate of 1.50 per cent — from 68,5852 to 75,7743 — in 2005.

* Sector-wise break-up revealed that rural areas accounted for only 3.48 per cent of the establishments and the rest 96.52 per cent was in urban areas.

* The major economic activity group of ‘retail trade’ranked first with 48.9 per cent of share in total establishments, followed by ‘manufacturing (including repair)’ and ‘community, social, personal services and other’ activities with 18.19 per cent and 9.99 per cent shared respectively.

* Delhi was ranked 12th in all India ranking in respect of employment contributing about 3.61 per cent of the total employment in India.

* The total number of persons usually found working in the establishments was 35,56387. The average employment per establishment comes to 4.69 persons. Employment registered an annual growth rate of 0.23 per cent between 1998-2005.

* Hired employment accounted for 75.25 per cent (26.76 lakh persons) of the total employment.

* Composition of women in the total employment was 3.73 lakh (10.50 per cent).Share of women workers in agricultural establishments was 12.54 per cent while for non-agricultural establishments was 10.49 per cent.

* Employment in rural area establishments stood at 70,063 (1.97 per cent) and that of urban areas was 34,86324 (98.03 per cent).

* Of the total, 96.47 per cent were private establishments.

* 10.06 per cent of private establishments were owned by Scheduled Castes, 14.66 per cent by OBCs.
