Denied a cellphone, youth stabs father

kolkata, April 28 A 22-year-old youth stabbed his father with a kitchen knife this morning after the latter refused to buy him a cellphone. According to the police, the boy has a history of mental illness. The incident took place at Bentinck Street.

Ayodhi Routh, 58, was critically injured and is admitted at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. The accused, Bittu Routh, is absconding.

Ajay Ranade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), said: “The man was stabbed in the stomach. His son is absconding.”

Ayodhi, who is from Bihar, worked as a security guard of a residential-cum-office at 6 B Bentinck Street. He was provided with a quarter on the roof of the building. Ayodhi has three children, all staying in Bihar. Three days ago, he brought his youngest son Bittu to Kolkata for treatment. He was taken to the CMCH.

Last night, an altercation ensued when Bittu said he wanted to watch television throughout the night. When Ayodhi protested, Bittu smashed the television in a fit of rage. This morning Bittu asked his father for a cellphone. When Ayodhi said he did not have enough money, Bittu grabbed a knife and stabbed him a number of times. Ayodhi was rushed to the CMCH.

Bittu managed to flee in the commotion.
