Department to give free education to minority students

Chandigarh, January 28 The UT Advisor Pardeep Mehra announced the proposal of the Education Department for providing free education facilities for minority students on the eve of Republic Day. Chandigarh is possibly the only city in the country to provide free education facilities for students belonging to the minority communities such as Christians, Muslims and Kashmiri migrants. Meanwhile, a number of scholarships have also been revised. The changes will be implemented from the next academic session.

The department has also decided that students in SC/ST category will be provided a 50 per cent discount. The Director Public Instructions (S) S K Setia said that the scholarship amount for students’ upto Class VIII has been increased from Rs 30 to Rs 250 per month for students, with a parental income limit of Rs 1.5 lakh. The department has also increased the amount under the merit scholarships from Class IX to Rs 300.

The merit scholarship amount under the Harijan scheme for class VI to VIII has also been increased to Rs 150 for boys and Rs 200 for girls, whose family income limit is upto Rs1.5 lakh anually. In case of Class IX and XII students, the revised amounts stand at Rs 250 for the first division, Rs 200 for the second division and Rs 150 for the third division.
