Despite 26/11, we’ve to live as good neighbours: Pak

Shah Mahmood Qureshi

Islamabad Seeking resumption of dialogue with India, Pakistan on Saturday said the two countries will have to live as ‘good neighbours’ despite the ‘hiccup’ caused in bilateral ties by the Mumbai terrorist strikes.

It also asserted that it wants its probe into the attacks to be ‘transparent’ and ‘open to examination’ because the government is ‘serious’ in prosecuting those responsible.

"The most important thing is that India and Pakistan have to live as good neighbours," Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said in an interview in Munich, where he is participating in an international security conference.

"Our democratically elected government started on a policy of normalisation (with India) and we were doing fairly well till the unfortunate Mumbai incident that has caused a hiccup and there is a pause in the composite dialogue," he said in the interview, excerpts of which were aired by Pakistani television channels.

India and Pakistan should resume the composite dialogue process, which began in 2004, to ensure peace in their neighbourhood, he said.

Noting that Pakistan wanted to get over the problems caused by the Mumbai incident ‘as soon as possible’, Qureshi said, "We want to resume dialogue with India because we feel that if we want development in South Asia, if we want regional peace, then normal friendly relations between Pakistan and India will play a significant role."

Qureshi said Pakistan will soon share with India and the world community the report on its investigation into the Mumbai attacks.

"We will share our preliminary report not just with India but with other important players of the world. We will share this report because we want our investigations to be fair, transparent and open to examination because the government of Pakistan is serious in prosecuting people who are responsible for the Mumbai incident," he said.

Neighbour my foot by chanakya on 09 Feb 2009

Pakistan must realise it is talking to new India and not old peace loving humble and unarmed India. Today's India is too above the raech of Pakistan and its dreams of doing any nonsense with or without thehelp of locals will only be a mirage. So my dear minister better keep your house in order and then come out for relations. We know you can not handle your domestic issues and ultimately it will be your so called friends who will do it for you. May be another Afghanistan or Iraq in waiting.

Good Neigbours by maccikhan on 08 Feb 2009

Despit 26/11 we can still be good neighbours. What sort of cheap statement is this from the Minsiter of foreign affairs. Have ever thought of living like frinds and good neighbours? GOOD NEIGHBOURS this term does fix in the mind set of Pakistan at all. The attitude of Pakistan is always to keep the situation tens. Terror has become a routine of thier life, it is gaining momentum day and night and the govt. is a silent spectator and above all it is the protector of its pertuators. close your terorist camps, arrest their leaders, stop protecting them, bring them to justice and punish, and admit "Yes we are the leaders in terrorism" and then think of resuming dialogue to normalise the situation. It is the terroist from Pakistan who have damaged the seemingly slow process of normalisation between the two countries, not anybody from India. Mere talking and sympathising is not the way to normalise the realtions, but it is the action taken to punish the perpetuators of this henious crime.

Pakistan's Foreign Policy Tool by Suraj on 08 Feb 2009

Mr. Foreign Minister should clearly understand that there is a limit to everything. How long should the Indian people suffer just because they have a failed state as Pakistan as their neighbour which is in fact our biggest curse. No country in the world will be in this peculiar position in which your neighbour's only aim is to forment trouble. There is only one solution - Pakistan has to set its house in order. The taliban have the full control of FATA where Pakistani forces don't have any control. The main problem here with Pakistan is there is no actual democracy in Pakistan where the real power could be with the elected representatives and nobody knows for sure who is the real authority there. Another important dilema is the support to these terrorists by the state establishment itself as an IMPORTANT FOREIGN POLICY TOOL. But this policy has hit Pakistan hard back on its face. Hence it is BETTER LATE THAN NEVER to set its house in order before other countries are forced to do it.

Terrorists country as good neighbours by ramesh k on 08 Feb 2009

You leader of a terrorist nation, what do you mean by good neighbours? You shameless people begging all around the world, and yet use that money to terrorise such nations who helped you! Good that India is more or less a pseudo-secular nation with the present congress/UPA govt. which considers everything based on the appeasement of the votebank community in India! Otherwise, you would have learned the lesson by now!

FOR WHAT? by Varghese Joseph on 08 Feb 2009

After a series of denials and hesitations, why such a statement from the Foreign Minister of Pakistan? By late, he has realised the whole stupidity what they have and had stated were all false? He alone cannot change Pakistans fundamental principles and policies that have to be taken with India. Is it? He and the presently elected democratic government led by Asif Ali Zardari should get a full permission from ISI

pakistan by manish on 08 Feb 2009

Indian govt has always failed to understand that pakistan was our enemy and will always be our enemy, yet even after all the wars and terrorism we invited them to play cricket, invited to participitate in our tv shows, shame on the indian politicians who cannot understand and forget easily. Even after 26/11 Manmohan singh sent happy new year cards to pakis, then to pakistan if you like them so much, stupid idiots.

Good neighbours by Sajith on 08 Feb 2009

Arey,if Pakistan is to become a good neighbour with no ill will against India, then where is the founding ideal of that nation? Then, what is the basis of existence of pakistan which was made in 1947 upon hatred and intolerance towards fellow citizens? So, it is a wishful thought by the beleaguered PM. The idea cannot be sold in Pakistan itself on the first hand.

Goog Neighbour- are you one? by Jas on 08 Feb 2009

Please tell that to your favorite ISI and your non state actors, who are born in your counry and for some strange reason happen to live there too. To have a good neighbour you have to be one first. Are you one? Or more importantly are you capable of being one? Or even more importantly are you allowed to be one by ISI ?

Despite 26/11 by Paul Anand on 08 Feb 2009

Mr. Qureshi must admit that 26/11 was planned in Pakistan before any dialogue should take place. India must stand up and make a point that peace is possible only if Pakistan brings the culprits of 26/11 in front of the International community. These Muslim terrorist were the Citizens of Pakistan, who slaughtered the parents of the little baby in the Jewish center in Mumbai. Pakistan must arrest Daud Abraham and his gang who are like rats trying to hide under sewers of filthy Pakistan ISI. Indian goverment must stress the conditions in front of the International community ,i.e. Daud and his gang must be given to the Indian authorities so that they can be prosecuted to the fullest and brought to justice. My muslim friends from Pakistan just laughed after reading Mr. Qureshi's statement. Would any body trust Mr. Qureshi's statement and take him seriously.I hope my good old Indian friends do not take Mr. Qureshi seriously.

Lies by Sudhak on 08 Feb 2009

Mr. Qureshi, Your govt didn't hand over any of the terrorists leaders or narcotic smugglers to Indian govt. Terrorist camps are running as usual in your country. How, ordinary poor young men can get the training of naval commandos, with out invlovment of your state agancies? Your govt knew every thing about mumbai attaccks. the planners sitting in pakistan watched TV, passing directions on minute to minute basis, enjoying every cry and death with happiness. In this subcontinent, only your country is the sole creator of all problems. The terrorists trained by your ISI and pakistan army are causing destruction all over the globe (including in pakistan) as ISI has many faces. Now, your govt has started a new story of bangladesh involvment. even the terrorist camps and network in bangladesh are being run by your. ISI. Your govt has been doing its best to destroy India in every possible way; now you are bluffing about talks? It is not very far that your country might have to face war

Peace with in Pakistan by Dr. Prasad Mothadaka on 08 Feb 2009

The kind of comments made by the fellow readers need attention of Pakistan Foreign Minister before saying something more about normalizing the relationship with India. All billion people are not in mood to be mellowed and fed up of violence perpetuated across the borders. They want pragmatic action from the state players that it is end of it. No more Mumbai kind of attacks. Can that be ensured? Yes, every one wants peace and development. For this to happen what is required is development of peace with in the state. Let no citizen of Pakistan be brain washed to believe that India is the dangerous and is unto to destroy Pakistan. This rhetoric has served its purpose. Let the funds given by USA and donor countries be used only for developmental purpose and not for funding and instigating violence across the borders. Let the peace take its origin with in Pakistan and it will automatically spread elsewhere. The relations with India will automatically become normal and cordial.

Good neighbour? by Dr. Paras Deo on 08 Feb 2009

Pakistan is a neighbour by geography not by choice. Time to build THE GREAT WALL OF INDIA and remain separated from the that has more terrorist than the whole world combined. Wasn't the Pakistani Govt. the only Govt in the world that had recognized the Taliban regime of neighbouring Afghanistan? So much for so called " good neighbour"

Despite 26/11, we’ve to live as good neighbours: Pak by Suresh Rao on 07 Feb 2009

Absolutely Right !!! Now Why don't you ???If you want to get over the problems of Mumbai attacks as soon as possible then just hand over the 20 wanted terrorists. Sacrifice the human rights of those 20 terrorists (if you consider them as human beings) and you will find that India also would not be found wanting

Banana Republic of Pakistan by Lax Sawkar on 07 Feb 2009

Pakistani's words cannot be trusted. If they are sincere in their words they can hand over the terrorists demanded by India and dismantle terrorist training camps.Talk is cheap for Pakis. They are a failed state and trying to black mail not only India but all peace loving countries. No country should take Pakis words as they have proved beyond doubt they are not trust worthy. Even President Zardari, Mr.ten percent, does not trust his country's legal system and has asked UN to investigate Mrs. Bhutto's murder.Whenever they have internal problems they create and export terror. Currently army is loosing face and men, in thousands in Swat and NWFA. Just to divert the attention of Pakistani people they executed a plan of attack in Mumbai. They were expecting that India will attack, and hence they can withdraw from Swat and NWFA blame India, this is only thing makes country together. Only solution for Banana Republic is devide the country in four. Let them fight and destroy each other.

No Way! We DONT Believe You by No way! on 07 Feb 2009

Foolish Indian politicians should not fall for this trick. We have seen this in action many times. Everytime there is an attack there is reference to "peace process" which is a synonym for "give us Kashmir". No way! All this peace process is mere diversion, the actual agenda is to spread the evil un-holy war (for them it is holy war, for us it is unholy war) throughout India.

Dialogue with Pakistan by R.J. Khurana on 07 Feb 2009

Pak Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi has once again talked of resumption of composite dialogue to normalize relations with India (We want to live as good neighbours: Munich, 07/02). It is true that we have to live as good neighbours. But the trouble is that their words have invariably been at variance with their actions. They want to look good before the world and talk of peace. At home, the Wahabi-inspired jingoism takes control of their faculties. Pakistan’s embrace of Wahabi ideology has landed them in deep trouble. Today, the Wahabis are out of control. They reject all non-Wahabi followers of Islam (35 Shias killed on 06/02) and all others and are highly prone to using violence, in all its ugly manifestations against them, India topping the list. Pakistan needs to change its mindset and soon everything will fall in its place. But will they ever practise what they love to preach? Seems highly unlikely. R.J. Khurana,

Then LPC by Atif on 08 Feb 2009

You have no good relation with any of your neighbour. We are not bangladesh , sri lanka aur nepal to get influence by you.We will do tit for Tat.U follows Chankias theory then keep suffering.Look at china they have more then double neighbors then you and doesn't have any such type of enemies as you are creating. We solve our and china dispute over Kashmir area very early and see our relations. You don't care about the will of kashmiri people and afraid that they will spit on your faces if given right of self determination as other part of Muslim majority areas did at partition time.

Good Neibhours by Anant on 07 Feb 2009

Let us be honest and accept the fact that we are different people with different values. Pakistan can't live in peace internally or externally. Pak belief in achieving objectives by terrorism is not the Indian thinking nor its practice. India has no choice but to live along a very unstable neighbour. But we don't have to kiss and hug them. India needs to seal her borders totally and shoot on sight any insurgency. India has to cotrol her borders absolutely and have no exchange with Pak until Pak becomes civilised and understands the international norms. We don't have to wish them any bad things but wish them well and a speedy recovery to recognise human values.
