Ludhiana, February 2 Although Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has announced to exempt primary schoolchildren from attending classes for a week yet the authorities of some private schools have ignored the order.

Keeping in view the ongoing cold wave in the region, the Chief Minister made this announcement at Amritsar on January 31. Following this Harcharanjeet Kaur Brar Director Public Instructions (Elementary Education) also said in a section of press that orders issued on the directions of the Chief Minister are mandatory for all the schools in the state. And there are some schools that are in no mood to change the timings.

Kundan Vidya Mandir Principal S C Saxena said, "We did not get any written orders in this regard. Since yesterday athletic meet is going on, which will continue till tomorrow. We have declared Monday as holiday. But if we get written orders, we will follow it."

There are about 2,000 schools in the state that are affiliated to Punjab School Education Board (PSEB). Rajinder Sharma PSEB Affiliated Schools Association President said, "I was out of town yesterday and was not aware of these orders. So we have declared one week holidays for the students of primary level starting Monday."

He says that the untimely holidays will affect the result of students. Sharma said, "Parents have been calling me and asking me why schools have been closed during examination days. They fear that students might not study at home. This will also affect Class V result, which is a board class.

However, some school authorities take the excuse of starting the school late. While others say that this would disturb the examination schedule of all classes. BCM Arya Model School Principal Paramjeet Kaur said, "Schools open 9:30 am and the students up to primary level do not spend much time in the campus."

Meanwhile, all the government schools up to Class V have been closed till January 9 but the teaching as well as the non-teaching staff has to report to the school. Requesting anonymity, a government schoolteacher said, "The final examination of Class V will start from February 18. We are worried that children will forget what they had learnt."

R S Model Senior Secondary School Principal M L Kalra said, "We also got the orders late, so announced one week holidays starting Monday. But Class V students will have to report regularly."
