Ludhiana, May 16 The sale of various cut fruits and other food items in the open is continuing unabated even after Deputy Commissioner Sumer Singh Gurjar recently ordered a ban on the sale of such items in the city.

For want of proper check on the sale of such food items, the practice is rampant in all parts of the city. The Newsline team conducted a survey in some key locations and found glaring examples of unhygienic standards of the cut fruits and food items at the roadside stalls at Field Ganj, Brown Road, near the Civil Hospital, Samrala Chowk, Model Town and Naulakha Cinema Road.

The DC has banned the sale of overripe, raw fruits and sugarcane juice if prepared under unhygienic conditions. He has also banned sale of cakes, biscuits, bread, buttermilk, sherbet and other such items unless they are properly covered. The DC issued instructions on May 13 and ordered the ban in a bid to prevent the spread of cholera in the city.

Civil Surgeon Dr SP Sharma said after the ban, the department had issued instructions to the senior medical officers (SMO) of all areas and asked them to keep a check on the sale of such items.

"We are taking all measures to execute the ban. However, it is not possible to keep a check on all such rehri owners, who sell such items because of their sheer large numbers. But we have already conducted checking drives in areas near the bus stand and railway station," said Dr Sharma.

A rehri owner at Field Ganj, said, "We have not even heard of any ban. But it is not possible to ban sale of such items because there are so many rehri owners in the city selling cut fruits and other food items. But cut-fruit sellers like me who ensure proper hygiene should not be made victims in the name of such a ban."
