Dharavi makeover: 19 consortia in the running

Mumbai, January 9 The much-delayed Dharavi Redevelopment Project is inching ahead with the state government announcing the shortlist of qualified developers who had bid to participate in the Rs 9,250-crore project. Nineteen of the 26 consortia that had placed their bids now remain in the running. “The qualified bidders will be invited to place their financial bids in the next couple of days,” said Dr T Chandrashekhar, chief of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and officer on special duty for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.

Meanwhile, a biometrics-based Baseline Socio-Economic Survey of all households in the Central Mumbai slum is set to be completed by the month-end. “We are also conducting other surveys, including a GIS survey for satellite imaging and a transportation requirements study,” Chandrashekhar said. While the Baseline Socio-Economic Survey began about two moths ago The transportation study is being conducted by Canada-based Lea Associates, the firm that has conducted a Comprehensive Transportation Study for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The 19 qualified consortia, including some global realty majors, were evaluated on the basis of various criteria including a minimum annual turnover of Rs 2,560 million and a minimum net worth of Rs 3,070 million.

The big names range from the likes of Dubai-based Limitless, which is building Bidadi, the US $ 12 billion, 4,000-hectare mixed-use project near Bangalore. Limitless has also collaborated on the Jumeirah Palms, the palm-shaped islands on the Dubai waterfront. Also qualified are DLF, the Magarpatta Township Development & Construction Company which has developed Pune's Magarpatta City and the Sindhu Resettlment Coropration, whose website says the firm was established in 1948 in Kutch, especially to resettle persons displaced from West Pakistan. The Africa Israel Investment Ltd, which builds premium gated communities in Israel, and Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Engineering Associates Pvt Ltd have also qualified, along with L&T, Indiabulls and Emaar MGF.
