Mumbai, February 20: Dhoni attracts highest price in landmark auction

India's charismatic one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today emerged as the hottest property in world cricket after being sold out for a staggering USD 1.5 million dollars (approx Rs 6 crore) in a landmark auction which marked the beginning of a lucrative new era in cricket.

The 26-year-old Dhoni set the tempo for the first ever auction of world's top cricketers when he was acquired by the Chennai franchisee for a three-year period, adding another mind-boggling chapter of monetary gains in the BCCI's multi-million dollar Indian Premier League scheduled to begin in mid-April.

Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds, who recently made headlines for being at the centre of a racial row involving Harbhajan Singh, proved that the controversy had not dented his brand value as he attracted the second highest price of USD 1.35 million (appro Rs 5.4 crore) with the Hyderabad team securing his services.

Eight franchise owners, including corporate tycoons like Mukesh Ambani and liquor baron Vijay Mallya and Bollywood superstars Shahrukh Khan and Priety Zinta, bid for 77 cricketers in a pioneering process which has the potential to change the face of the game.

Flamboyant Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya, despite being aged 38, was sold out to Ambani-owned Mumbai team for a whopping Rs 3.9 crore, while Australian speedster Brett Lee (Rs 3.6 crore), South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis (Rs 3.6 crore), Harbhajan Singh (Rs 3.4 crore), West Indian opener Chris Gayle (Rs 3.2 crore) and retiring Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist (Rs 2.8 crore) were some of the other big draws.

If you can't beat them, buy them! by Taj on 21 Feb 2008

India has finally come up with a plan that will attract people back to watching cricket in India. Lets face it, India are a very poor second best team in the world. So,pay big money to buy Australians, South Africans, Sri Lankans, West Indians and Pakistani's who have heart and are excellent players to watch, and mix them with a bunch of ordinary Indian players. When the Indians fail in these new IPL teams, it will be interesting to hear the excuses.

Now how will they determine the winner of world cup by Sanjay on 21 Feb 2008

Yep you foriegners are easily bought.

And the winner is- by SVS on 21 Feb 2008

Andrew Symonds USD 1,350,000 - Harbhajan Singh USD 850,000. The amazing thing is, these prices are determined by Indians!

whats wrong with us indians? why are we envying crickter's money? by sh on 21 Feb 2008

I still dont get why all the bloggers think that bidding for a cricketer is like prositution. That way, any office-worker/teacher or anyone else involved in any profession can be categorised to be the same. All anyone of these is doing is selling their time/efforts to earn a few more bucks(including the farmer who tills(exploits) the land and uses(abuses) the cattle/trees etc.. for his own ends)! Remember these cricketers are not selling themselves, rather they are selling their skills to the respective franchises. I feel most of the bloggers here are lazy IT people(myself included) who are more than a touch jealous of all the money that crickters are going rake in. I like it and wish even the ICL becomes as big a success. Helping the poor people aint one of cricketers problems, it is the government's problem. So dont blame cricketers getting rich for all the nations' ills. It is also an Indian thing to see something wrong when a person makes money even if it is their most popular crickter. Just disgusted with those that envy others success.

Time to boycott Hyderabad team and other Aussie loving teams by viky on 21 Feb 2008

indians should boycott the IPL teams which bought aussies, If they get a hit in ratings, automatically they will relieve the aussies from playing for them. I hope the IPL will be a big flop.

Everyone loves the Aussies by Jon on 21 Feb 2008

Viky, you miss the point. They have to buy Australians so people WILL watch the games. Nobody is going to watch a bunch of heartless Indians playing cricket.

Sydney robbers by Indi on 21 Feb 2008

Indians dont love sydney robbers and sydney thieves to watch them play. World has better players than sydney robbers. It was the same sydney robbers symonds, hayden and ponting who goared at Indian money power. Now they want the same Indian money for which they are ready to sell themselves. Shame on them. They dont have any self respect or self esteem. Sydney robbers have turned out to be international beggers.

am I missing something or people just dont get it? by sh on 21 Feb 2008

What has famers dying and every unfortunate thing that happens in India got to do with how much these cricketers earn? Its not as if farmers will continue to live and prosper if cricketers dont earn money. Is it? One of the questions was how does this help the poor?! This doesnt help the poor and the Indian cricket board was neither setup for it nor has one of it tasks as "helping the poor and the farmer". It has only one mission - manage and encourage cricket in India. I see nothing wrong with whats happening with IPL. Infact I see that players are getting what is due to them in the first place and have been missing out all these years. Finally they are getting the money instead of the lion share going to the board. Look at European Soccer, NBA. Someone even mentioned that cricket is getting americanised, Rather cricket is finally coming out the grips of BCCI/CA/ICC and their subsidiaries. I dont think even the BCCI realizes what it has unleashed. Thats the beauty of this beast.

The Trade show of......what do you call it? by Raju on 20 Feb 2008

What happened to play for the nation and pride of the nation? It reminds us of slave trading in USA or Mela of Rajashthan where animals get traded!

Mercenary Cricket by Sanjay on 20 Feb 2008

So much for nationalism, It should be called mercenary cricket. Play for the highest bid.I thought IPL would help discover new talent that seems not to be case, It is just mercenary cricket, with no nationalism or region. It is doomed to fail.
