Dhoni stops short of denying resignation reports

Bangalore, November 22: A selection controversy rocked the Indian cricket team on Saturday following reports that Mahendra Singh Dhoni had threatened to resign as captain after he had failed to ensure that bowler RP Singh was retained in the side playing the current ODI series against England.

On the eve of the fourth ODI against England, a livid Dhoni did little to dampen the speculation about resignation threat when he said that ‘something or the other leaks out’ but stopped short of denying the reports.

Dhoni apparently wanted R P Singh, who gave away 49 runs without taking a wicket in the second ODI after which he was dropped and the selectors replaced him with Irfan Pathan.

"I don't know from where the reports came from. It cannot be a report. What happens inside while the selectors and the captains are there, if it comes comes out, it is disgusting, it's disrespecting. Things like these should not happen," Dhoni said.

"I am not talking about whether something or not happened in the selection meeting. Over the years, we have found out something or other goes out. We go to see, we are at the highest stature because we are selecting 16 guys for the Indian team.”

"We will have debate inside and things like this should not come out. I think if they are suppose to come out, it's better we have a live television out there because what comes out. Nobody should know apart from the eight guys who are sitting down," Dhoni said.

Asked whether the controversy would affect the players ahead of the match, Dhoni said, "Not really. I don't think it was as important. Plenty of things are out there.”

"We have an important match coming up. We are all focussed on that. It's raining since morning so we are a bit worried about the practice session," he said.

Dhoni was angry with the with way media blew up the issue and said selection matters should not come out in the open.

"It's a selection thing. Personally, I don't discuss anything outside. Whatever happens stays in the meeting, stays inside. Whatever comes out of the meeting I would prefer it to come out from either BCCI or the chief selector or the group of selectors," the India captain said.

According to media reports, Dhoni had a disagreement with the selectors during the meeting in Kanpur on Thursday to pick the team for the fourth and fifth matches of the ongoing series.

Dhoni was unhappy that the selectors decided to drop R P Singh and include Irfan Pathan in his place and offered to resign, the reports claimed.

The BCCI, however, came out with a vague response which neither confirmed nor denied the development.

"I can't respond to something that is being floated around by somebody," BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said.

The reports said BCCI President Shashank Manohar was forced to interfere and sort out the issue.

Dhoni said such leaks were detrimental for the game in the country and told the media that it would be better if the identity of the person who leaked the report could be known.

"It would be good for the Indian cricket if you quote that person," he said.

Dhoni said he shared a good relation with his teammates and hoped that such reports would not create a rift in the team.

Asked specifically if it would affect his relation with the two players Dhoni said, "To some extent it does. The good thing is that we trust each other because in a scenario like this all of a sudden you have to get in touch with R P Singh and Irfan Pathan.”

"And you don't want RP to feel that I will go out of the way and stand and defend him and Irfan should not feel I don't want him in the team. But the good part is that both of them trust me and my talks with them went of well."

Dhoni was also unhappy with the timing of the reports since it came on the eve of an important match.

"I don't think it's appropriate that it happened at a point like this because I don't think we have an outstanding and talented side to win every match but as a team we will become outstanding. For us the winning mantra is team effort," he said.

Dhoni meanwhile welcomed the return of Sachin Tendulkar into the squad and did not rule out the possibility of him opening the innings on Sunday.

"We all want him to play for long. It's a pleasure to have him in the team. It will help youngsters."

Dhoni also felt that pace spearhead Zaheer Khan needed rest but indicated that he will play tomorrow's match, which if India wins, will seal the series for the hosts.

Dhoni said he was worried about the weather conditions as the pitch and outfield at the Chinnaswamy stadium had dampness following intermittent rains, the city has been experiencing since Saturday afternoon.

"It is quite soft. There is dampness. If sun shines it would be good," he said.

This inofrmation about Dhoni wanting to resogn shouldn't have leaked out. Has the BCCI done anything about it?

Dhoni by ketan on 25 Nov 2008

Besides the selectors , dhoni as a captain should be allowed to express his opinion. some internal person has actually leaked out this information which is not correct.

A member of cricket Selection Committee is stooge of media and does not deserve to be in the committee. by Edie on 24 Nov 2008

BCCI must look into the leak episode. Selection committee has a media stooge who is leaking information for money. This guy is very dangerous for Indian cricket. Find him out and expose in public and ban him for life. This single individual's presence in selection committee will cost India many series and world cup. BCCI and media should be aware of and so is common fans. Most of the fqns have played stupids and jumped to criticise Dhoni when they should have been gunning for propreity and integrity from selection committee members.

Why BCCI asks captains to be a part of the selection if selectors do not need captains input? by Dinesh on 24 Nov 2008

Dhoni is aboslutely right. You need to give a chance to players to prove themselves. There should not be double standard in the selection. Dravid has not been scoring since three series but is still in test team why? because you want to give him more chances to come up. RP has been out due to injury and did not perform well in two matches he is out why? Why you can not give RP a chance to work out in remaining 3 inconsequential matches. It may do wonders for his confidence. Remember RP has proven himself before and if you are making a team for world cup you need to have 5-6 bowlers just in case one or two of your front line bowlers get injured. Dhoni is absolutely right to demand a team of his choice. Otherwise why you ask captain to be present during selection.

Dhoni stay out by tina on 24 Nov 2008

Dhoni should be asked to stop interfering and leave it to the selectors to do the job.

let the selectors decide by vrisika on 23 Nov 2008

Dhoni as a captain is great no doubts about it. Selection should solely on merit and performance and no other factors not that dhoni is being blamed for it as we have players from all religious backgrounds in the indian team .Both rp and ip are good It should be left for the selectors to decide who needs to be in accordance to skill.Focus should be more on continuity of winnings .

Lets focus by Afzal Ahmed on 23 Nov 2008

We have a young Captain who had the opportunity to lead our specialist players. He has done well and will do the same in the future. Let all back him up. Forget the differences and move on with new views and stratergies. Dhonie you are the MAN.

CAPTAIN by CRICKET on 23 Nov 2008

captain does not select the team------captain has the following duties---1] to toss and decide batting or fielding [2] to decide batting order [3] to make bowling changesm[4] to decide when second new ball is to be taken [5] to decide about declaration. NEITHER THE CAPTAIN IS A SELECTOR NOR IS HE BOARD SECRETARY----IF CAPTAIN DECIDES THE TEAM WHY 5 SELECTORS ARE REQUIRED? MOREOVER THIS WILL GIVE RISE TO SYCOPANCY the team is winning because of selectors--THEY HAVE CHOSEN THE RIGHT COMBINATION.[as vijay merchant did in 1971]

captains role by Edie on 24 Nov 2008

Then why call captain during selection if his voice is not heard?

so be it by Prakash on 23 Nov 2008

If Dhoni thinks he cannot accept the team he is given and has the cheek to threaten resignation, he could do this again. Maybe people have been giving this guy too much credit and now its gone to his brain.

Religious Criket by Afzal Ahmed on 23 Nov 2008

Its unfortunate that some of my fellow indians felt that Dhoni had special interest in RP or was against Irfan. He is one of the best captains we have had and his stratergies are different than the others. Our selectors are very old fashioned and we need change. come on man.... what do you mean Dhonie is against muslims? he plays along with Khan, Munaf, YPatan. Does it matter what is any indian players religion. What it matters is our term win. So let the best Indians play.

Is a captain bigger than the team India? by Sajin Varghese on 23 Nov 2008

The pride should not exceed over somebody’s head then the downfall begins. Selectors are doing their duty and their policy of ‘in-form’ players should be immediately get a chance has worked so well.Irfan Pathan,an allrounder, who is in tremendous form in domestic cricket suitable than out of form RP Singh. His performance has to be revived in domestic matches where his state team is more required his service. I don’t want to immaturely to point out that Dhoni is being ruled by overpride, however, he should think that selectors are pushing Virender Sehwag to the front-runner post of captain by elevating him as vicecaptain. Ravi Shastri has once said thand now swallowed that Sehwag is the right choice for the captain considering his tremendous form in all forms of games, whereas, Dhoni has to establish himself as a test batsman. But now the scene is different, he proved as good captain, but no captain is bigger than the team India.Nobody is irreplaceable as told to dhoni by BCCI President

Then why we are still selecting Dravid? by Dinesh on 24 Nov 2008

I agree that inform players should be selected. But it doesnot happen in India other wise why Dravid is still in the team? He has not performed well in 7 straight tests. Is there anyother criterion or is it just a double standard. I admire Dhoni for not being puppet of losers (selection committee). That was the reason Tendulkar and Dravid had refused to be captains.

Let Dhoni Resign .. by Sriram on 23 Nov 2008

India is not winning just beacuse of Dhoni. It is the team spirit. Everyone is playing well EXCEPT R P Singh. His aweful bowling and irresponsible catch drops deserve him to be removed. If Dhoni wants to resign, let him do it. If not for Isahnt, Zahkeer, and Bhajji (on bowling) and Shewag, Yuvi, and Gambhir (on batting), Dhoni can NOT have won any of these games.

Selection by vrisika on 23 Nov 2008

Both Rp and Irfhan are good There shouldn't be any regional interest coming in the way for selection. Irfan is more experienced .

Dhoni stop short of by Kumar on 23 Nov 2008

Dhoni, just grow up , you have hardly double digit matches as captain, dont be stupid, pick the team on merit not on personal likings , game is bigger then the friendships, think about if you pik the people u like but they dont perform and u keep loosing games , whose head is going to be on the chopping board, ealrn the lessons from ohers , just think what happened to Ponting, he only lost few matches and people have start pointing fingers. SO dont be a dill but prove urself a gr8 players ans Captain. All the best and good luck as you ahve lot to offer to the Indain Cricket and to the game of cricket as a whole.

Dhoni is attacking seclallular forces in committee, it is their duty to ensure communal hindus lose by Sec Lallu Lar on 23 Nov 2008

It is shameful the way communal Hindu Dhoni is attacking the person in committee who made the selection process transparent to encourage seclallularism. Every time a communal team loses and is demotivated by transparent leak, seclallular forces like Muslim Christian are strengthened. Otherwise, see how noble Chrisitian teams of Australia and England are losing, and how brave seclallular team of Paksitan is getting demolished. Is that good for our poor oppressed minority community true Indians like Muslim and Christian? NO! And now Dhoni is pointing fingers to minority community selectors who are trying to bring Patan and stop a Hindu captain from becoming too strong. Soniya ji must fire Dhoni from captaincy, and make cricket work like the seclallular Maharashtrian Anti Terrorist Squad which is also operating transparently about Hindu terrorists to media to promote communal harmony and seclallularism.

Bye Bye Dhoni!!!!! by Sheev on 22 Nov 2008

Hey Dhoni!!! I got words for you...selectors are doing there job and if you don't like which player they are picking then go back home and take care of your "TABELA". keep one thing n your mind who is paying your bills. do not dictate anyone and there are plenty of players like you in india. so shut up and play the game.and stop flying high you moron.

Without brain. by Edie on 24 Nov 2008

You are the Greatest stupid on the planet. And you are dumbshit too.

Both have wrong in each side by Jennifer on 22 Nov 2008

I think he has his opinion to tell but not to the media to selectors. selectors should have intimate him .MSDhoni has good capitancy so he should not resign.

Selectors going for Form by Prakash Krishnagiri on 22 Nov 2008

Dhoni is a good captain...agreed. Captain needs to have his opinion in the selection matters...agreed. But should the captain threaten to quit for the sake a out-of-form player-cum-friend? It is a know fact that RP and MS are very close friends. The selectors are only trying to pick games to win it. They are going for the man in form. They did the same when they picked up Vijay to open in the last test against australia. He was in form and they opted for him against Wasim Jaffer. Irfan Pathan is in form now, having had a good run in the domestic competitions, both with the bat and ball. With RP out of form, Irfan is a good option as he also bats better than RP and can be sent up as a pinch-hitter as well. I think MS is trying to push his new-found title a far too much. If he had not threatened to resign, he would have said a simple NO. Instead he is talking about leakage, which means he did threaten to resign. Surely he is cloud 9 and the 4th ODI goes to England.

Stupidity persists by Anil Khare on 22 Nov 2008

It is the same selectors who opposed Sehwag for so many years. They are still wrong, except their agenda is like politics without any consideration to sports.

Doctor by Dr Anuuj on 22 Nov 2008

IT IS CLEAR THAT DHONI IS HAVING A DELUSION OF GRANDEOUR, HAVING WON THE SERIES AGAINST AUSTRALIA. HE WILL SOON FIND THAT WHENEVER THE TEAM LOSES, HE WILL BE GETTING THE STICK AND NOT BCCI. INSTEAD OF FOCUSSING ON WINNING THE GAME WITH THE POOL OF PLAYERS HE HAS BEEN GIVEN, HE CHOOSES TO MAKE AN ISSUE OUT OF THE OMISSION OF A PALYER WHO IS NOT IN FORM. THIS ATTITUDE CREATES DIVISION IN THE TEAM AND I WILL NOT BE SURPRISED IF INDIA LOSES THE NEXT MATCH DUE TO LACK OF FOCUS. MAKE YOUR POINT DHONI BUT DO NOT INDULGE IN FAVOURITISM. MAY BE MANY PLAYERS HAVE GOT RECOGNITION AT AN EARLY AGE HENCE THEY HAVE NOT LEARNT TO FAIL.

Can't anyone see the real culprit here? by P Dalvi on 22 Nov 2008

rpsingh issue in bcci meeting by undefined on 22 Nov 2008

This is about time that board finds out who leaked it out. Its not difficult to know. Such hypocrates and sycophants with no back bone should be humiliated in public. They talk about professional ethics . Dhoni has done the right thing by saying it out. He is in a position to kick them back. These blokes have ruined careers of so many good players because of their regional interests. Where is mr. Gavaskar now find out who did it.

leading from front by bonaku on 22 Nov 2008

it is nice to see dhoin standing by his players. it will send strong message across the team that their is some one who cares for them. When it is come to selectors, it makes no sense to remove R.P for just one are two poor performances. This will dent this confidence very badly. Irfan is also good, but R.P has been siting out without match practice through out the test series and it will take some time for him to get into rythem. Finally, how can some one leak the information when it is held inside-doors. This has been happening one too many times. If someone can understand what is leadership, then no one will denies dhoni. It is good to see him leading from front.

Not players but friend by Indian on 23 Nov 2008

Dhoni is not standing by his players but friends. Can't you get it. Irfan is performing better than RP.

Credibility of a selector is questionable. by Dinesh on 24 Nov 2008

And Indian you are standing by stupid selector who leaked this info to press. That selector is a stooge of media and having no integrity is leaking committee minutes to media for money. How can a nation and BCCI afford such crooks in the selection team whos credibility is suspect.

kan pur odi left bitter taste in our mouth: flintoff by sauarbh on 22 Nov 2008

these types of thing done by them who do not believ on own effort. so english team do some thing special for series win dont blame on weather . did you forget that there were indian don on crease that time. MS dhoni. ok now try to win next match if you can. dear you are not able to make 250 in 50 overs . among 300 balls you play 50% dot ball in odi . is these factors are not enough to explain your play. dont believe on fortune believe on work other wise the series result will be 7-0 in favour of india. forget the time when you all ruled on us

Dhoni's attitude. by DEV on 22 Nov 2008

DHONI NEEDS LOT MORE EXPOSURE IN THE FIELD AND IN SELECTION BOARD AS WELL.FEW SUCCESS' DUE FEW PEOPLE'S CONTRIBUTION DO NOT REALLY MAKE HIM A CAPTAIN - BEFITTING ITS NAME. RELAX DHONI, PLAY MORE GAMES UNDER THE STUARDSHIP OF GREATS LIKE KRISHNAMACHARI, SACHIN
