Mumbai, March 20: The BCCI said ODI skipper M S Dhoni ‘was just speaking his mind’ on exclusion of senior cricketers from the team for the recently concluded CB series in Australia.

"Probably he is speaking his mind, his sentiments as a captain of the Indian team," BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Prof Ratnakar Shetty said after Dhoni was quoted by a website on Wednesday stating that he was clear in his mind about the players he wanted in the side, which left out Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly from the ODI team.

Shetty said he did not believe everything attributed to Dhoni was totally true and there must have been a difference in what he said and its interpretation by the media.

"I don't believe in what appears in the media totally because what Dhoni may have said and what was interpreted must have had a large difference," he said.

He also took a jibe on all those critical of the selection of youngsters especially after a good outing by the senior players in the Test series Down Under.

"When the ODI team was announced everybody in India and including some senior cricketers had commented severely on the compositions of the team. Now the performance is there for everybody to see, naturally so he feels probably in his mind, that there is a message which he sends also because if he had not done well, he would have been crucified by the media for whatever decision taken," Shetty added.

Shetty said there would not be any case of hostility towards the ODI skipper by the senior players and said there were countries wherein there are two teams playing in the Tests and in the ODI squads.

"I don't think it will create bad blood because this is not something which is new. In other countries, there are people who are playing in the Tests and ODI sides separately and it has never created a problem. They are all professional cricketers and know their role well and what is expected from them when playing for India," he said.

On whether there would be a selection policy from the BCCI to give the captains a free hand in the selection process, he said the selection is done taking the captain's view into account ‘after all he is good to lead the team and whether the performance good or bad, he will be taking the responsibility’ and said there was no laid down format or a policy in this regard.

He said there are youngsters pushing the more experienced players for the top spots and are staking claim for the ODI format.

"In Test cricket there are lot of seniors playing, there are lot of youngsters after the T20 World Cup who have pushed in to reckoning and naturally are staking claim for the ODI team."

Mr. Dhoni only suggestion is to please control your comments as you need to reach to that level before making any comments on these players. But at the same time requesting media also to not inflate the news as if Dhoni

Nobody owns our cricket team... by Jay on 21 Mar 2008

The Indian cricket team does not belong to the seniors or the juniors. So, no one need lay claim to it. Not Dhoni, not Ganguly. These cricketers act like being in the team or leading it makes them the owners of the team. I think, Ganguly should not be back in the team even if he averages a 100. He is a trouble maker and has no class. He is only worried about his place. Dhoni should also not let a couple of successes go it his head. All it takes is a couple of series defeats and he'll be fighting to keep his spot. The Indian public also should stop treating these overpaid, under-performing sportmen as if they are Gods.

stop blaming Ganguly for everything! by sportslover on 21 Mar 2008

In professional sports nobody gets oevrpaid. It's just their market value that the cricketers are getting. If they don't perform in any series for a continuous period, it's been proven earlier that their value falls, so stop thinking so hard! Moreover, don't get so biased to comment just without reason that a person should not be in a team even if he wins matches (by having 100 average!) for India! It's the present performance that should only matter in team selection and nothing else! This present age factor was not there when India went to play world cup final under Ganguly's captaincy after 20 long years! Dhoni seems to be as good a captain material probably like Ganguly, but let him first lead this team to next world cup final and reserve all comments till then. Finally stop blaming Ganguly for everything, rather try to learn something from his will power and his special abilities that a typical leader in any field of business should have! It's a rare quality for anybody to come as a best performer (read highest run-getter) in an year after so much of humiliation from his own countrymen!

Success due to Sachin by Yog Anand on 21 Mar 2008

One day series was won due to Sachin who is the senior most and to say that Dhoini wanted to send message across is a joke that the team he got won the series. The same team struggled to chase 156 against Aus and main contribution came from Sachin in that match also. If he got his team why did he not give any chance to Suresh Raina and sticked with useless Yuvraj who was flop with bat and ball. Also he should learn to talk with media.

Dhoni's Comments by Ashok Mehdiratta on 21 Mar 2008

Dhoni got the team he wanted and got theresult nation wanted. To that extent he should have thanked BCCI.If he has named /mentioned the word "Seniors" he is forgetting that he is still playing along with them in Test Team. One has to learn to addressMedia verysensibly.Dhoni should be careful as media can have various meanings of same statement/word as against only Two in Punjabi.

Fools at work by naresh on 21 Mar 2008

BCCI you can very well lick Dhoni's backside today but he cannot bring you the glory the seniors brought to you at your doorstep. If you the officials at the BCCI even have an iota of shame in you you will ask that damn asshole Dhoni to apologise, immediately.

Challnge of Mr. Dhoni to his team by Raju on 21 Mar 2008

Well, it should taken as challenge from Capt. Dhoni by the senior players. Why in the world these nautanki news media is reading something different. It was Dhoni's team who played in Australia and it will be Dhonis team who will play in South Africa. The media is trying to create bad blood between the players. Some time one wonders....who gets paid what in media for nautanki news?

do be exited DHONI by Nazeer Uddin on 21 Mar 2008

YEAH THE SERIES CLINCH WAS B'CAUSE OF SACHIN'S FANTASTIC KNOCK... NOT TRULY DHONIS CAPTAIN KNOCK. DONOT GET EXITED AND YOU NEED TO PROVE A LOT IN THE FUTURE. WITH ONE SERIES CLINCH YOU ARE NOT REGARDED HIGH MY DEAR

Drop Dhoni from test squad by FM on 21 Mar 2008

If performace is the criteria for selection then Dhoni should be dropped from the test side. His performance was below par. P Patel or Kartik should be given a chance. Dhoni is not test class. No techniquie one day and twenty20 is suited for his style. Kumble please drop him from the test side.. he is useless.

BAD TEST by jahar majumdar on 20 Mar 2008

i am not surprised with his comments. the boy got everything in life without any effort. he has not learnt even how to express himself.may be he wanted to say something else but said just the opposite. He has taken a right decision to go back to college for his degree!Only one TENDULKAR (SENIOR) showed that without him juniors are ZEERO!I am sure Dhoni will learn how to deal with media in future. may god bless himbest wishes for Mr.Dhoni.j majumdar

Dhoni's Blabber by A.Seth on 20 Mar 2008

The Australian chicanery against their cricketing opponents fades into insignificance when seen in the light of Mr. Dhoni's utterances (if they r true). The Aussie indulge in monkey business to ruin their 'opponents' composure but this rustic schemer seems to be hellbent on ruining his own team. This is not the first instance, remember "Fire or Retire". Dhoni, ghamand Dashanan ka bhee nahee chal tho yaar tu kis khet kee mooli hai?

Arrogance by Satish Haldankar on 20 Mar 2008

I think success has gone to Dhoni's head and that is the first step towards one's downfall. His comments are extremely in bad taste and totally uncalled for.

Dhoni's views and my feelings by Ranjit Dey on 20 Mar 2008

Dhoni's comments are reminding the flash light who don't care the Candles. Let us see when the flash light goes out of batteries. One who cannot honour the elder can hardly be identified as Indians. Is he unhappy with the Sachin also, who fetched the CB Cup?

Dhoni"s arrogance by syed afroz ashrafi on 20 Mar 2008

The recent victory against oz has catapulted Dhoni to the stature of a demi god and he hasnt recovered from the euphoria so far . In australia also he made a damaging statement regarding the exclusion of the seniors .It seems that Dhoni is still basking in the glory of the amazing success but does he know that the game is a great leveller and the success of yesterday does not go a long way . It is quite agreeable that some of the daring moves initiated by him bore fairytale results but it doesnt mean he would go overboard and undermine the importance of senior players . There was a time when Dada was worshipped as God of the indian cricket team and there was a time when Azharuddin was a much revered character but things dont remain what they are on a permanent basis . Dhoni is best advised to excercise discretion and check his arrogance as players come and go like rainfalls . Today he is the undisputed master and one loss will make all the difference between rise and fall.

A Team of billion players by Anna Das on 20 Mar 2008

BCCI can see if possible to create a team of one billion players. So no one have a complait.

Dhoni's blabber by ananth seth on 20 Mar 2008

These comments are under the presumption that Dhoni indeed uttered what is being reported in media and that there is no media spin in his comments. His inflated ego will get deflated at the first prick of defeat. He has proved it again that small town guys are more adept at politicking than sophisticated urbanites. Nothing else can explain the ascension to throne of this immature and hollow minded creature

Dhoni the Village Ass ! by eddie on 20 Mar 2008

It is but natural for a small town guy to have and hold grudges against the "city people". It used to happen in my college days when the village girls would swarm around city boys and make the village lads green with envy. Dhoni is carrying this grudge too far. Prof. Ratnakar Shetty says that the results are for all to see, thus betraying that neither he nor any BCCI official even saw the score card which won us the trophy. It was Mumbai master blaster who did the job single handedly as he did in Sharjah some years ago. Where were the Dhoni cronies such as Utapa and Yuvraj or even Gambhir who showed some scores in the earlier games. Dhoni has an axe to grind with Rahul and Dada. He is using politics and team spirit etc to hide behind the BCCI choli. By the way what happened to the restrictions on ads done by cricket stars ? BCCI along with Dhoni are playing to the small town galleries but without the seniors it will just be a rerun of finding out what is behind the choli ! Dhoni needs to grow up and grow out of that political mindset and he must do that fast ! He should not forget that there are many like us who can see through his fake facade.
