Shimla, January 24 Adhering to austerity measures, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has spared his helicopter for special flights to evacuate patients and other people in the tribal areas of the state, which are cut off these days due to heavy snowfall. In turn, the Chief Minister has opted to travel to all places by road for the next five days.

The CM is going to Sarkaghat for the Statehood Day on January 25, and get back to Shimla for the Republic Day celebrations. The state has only one helicopter which has been hired from Jharkhand government, as its own helicopter is under repair.

The CM has said that in view of the adverse climactic conditions, the helicopter should be put to use in tribal areas. This helicopter of Messco Airlines is expected to take special flights to evacuate critical patients and other people from Kaza, Saach, Udiapur, Tandi and Stingri in Lahaul and Spiti, Reckong Peo in Kinnaur, Chamba and Bhunter, from January 24 to 28.

Depending on weather conditions, the helicopter can make more than two flights on a single day too.

The CM took the decision of not sparing the helicopter a couple of days ago, after reports of heavy snowfall and need for evacuation of some patients came from the tribal areas.

The flight schedule to tribal areas was finalized today by Special Secretary, General Administration. Sources say Deputy Speaker Khimi Ram will go to Lahaul and Spiti for the Statehood Day celebrations on January 25.

On his return, he will be accompanied by people who have to be brought to Shimla.
