Digvijay, Sergio qualify for main draw

Chandigarh, January 6 CLTA trainee Digvijay Singh Mehta of India outplayed compatriot Sagar Ahuja in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 in the final qualifying round match of the boys' under-18 singles in the India ITF (Grade 3) Tennis Tournament being played at CLTA Tennis Stadium, Sector-10 on Sunday. With this win, Mehta moved into the main draw of 48 in the boys' under-18 singles in the championship which will begin on Monday.

However, another CLTA trainee Chandam Shaolin failed to make it to the main draw as he lost to Sikharulidele Sergio of Georgia 3-6, 7-6 (3), 1-6. Sergio fought well after losing the second set in the tie-break and finally won the match by emerging triumphant in the final set 6-1. In another match of the qualifying round, Shikhar Kapoor of India defeated compatriot Sidhant Solanki 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in a closely fought encounter to move into the main draw. Venketash Veera Vasanth of India ended the challenge of Khayriddinov Diyor of Uzbekistan with a 6-1, 6-2 victory to move into main draw while M Naveen Sai of India scored a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over compatriot Akshat Joshi. In another match in the qualifying round, Pulok Bhattacharya of India defeated Adit Jain of India 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

In the girls' under-18 singles qualifying round, Sai Pujitha Bandi of India scored an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over compatriot Sandeep Kaur to pave her way into the main draw while Rimpledeep Kaur of India was given a tough fight by compatriot Gundeep Kaur before winning in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. In another closely fought encounter, Jaspreet of India defeated compatriot Smriti Joon 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 while Sushma Gutta and Ravnoor Kaur of India got walkover from their opponents in the qualifying round.
