Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Vijay Kain; Dr Rohan Sunkaria, health secretary and managing director, PHSC; Dr S P S Sohal, Director, Health and Family Welfare Punjab; Dr A K Khullar, Deputy Director, (Food and Drug) were present at the meeting.
Dr Sohal said that a total of 2,514 samples of food items were taken in 2007. Of which, 439 were not up to prescribed standards laid under PFA Act.
He added told that in the current year, 580 samples were tested and 89 samples were found to be below prescribed standards.
Prof Chawla said that since the summer is in, there is a strong possibility of adulterations of milk and milk products due to deficit between demand and supply. She added that the incidence of water-borne diseases are also likely to rise. Vijay Kain directed all the officers to launch prosecution within 3 months in cases where samples have failed, strict action will be initiated against the erring officials.
Roshan Sunkaria said that the various adulterants that are generally used in milk and milk products are urea, hydrogen peroxide, caustic soda, etc, which are extremely harmful for humans.
