'Do not come up, I'll handle them,' Major's last words

New Delhi "Do not come up, I will handle them", these were probably the last words which Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan told his men as he was hit by bullets while engaging terrorists inside the Taj.

"Major Unnikrishnan was rescuing an injured commando when he was hit," Director-General of NSG J K Dutt said after he announced mission accomplished at the Taj and quoted the slain major as telling his crack team, "Do not come up, I will handle them".

"During the operation, when an commando got injured Unnikrishnan arranged for his evacuation and started chasing the terrorists himself," a senior National Security Guards (NSG) official said.

The terrorists escaped to another floor of the hotel and during the chase Unnikrishnan was seriously injured and succumbed to his injuries, the official said.

It was Unnikrishnan's second deputation with the elite NSG force.

Unnnikrishnan was commissioned in the 7th Bihar Regiment of the Army in 1999 and he first served the NSG during 1996-99 and again came back to it's 51 Special Action Group (SAG) in January 2007.

The 31-year-old officer was the lone son of his parents who hailed from Bangalore.

The other braveheart, Havildar Gajender Singh, was a specialist in heli-borne operations.

"Gajender Singh was chosen for the Nariman House operation as he qualified for the job extremely well. He was leading the slithering act and its follow up action," the NSG official said while paying homage to the slain commandos at the NSG headquarters in the national capital.

"While clearing the fourth floor of the Jewish residential complex, Singh spotted a terrorist fleeing into a room and engaged him by fire. As he closed on the militant, he was hit by grenade splinters unmindful of the injuries, he moved forward and then came under a hail of bullets," another official said.

Singh (36), belonged to the 10 PARA (Special Forces) and was about to complete a year with the ‘Black Cats’.

He hailed from Ganeshpur in Dehradun.

Singh is survived by his wife, a daughter (10) and a son (12).

Every part of India feels equal pain by Tripurari on 30 Nov 2008

Perhaps in hour of terror like this that country again stands united... No Biharis..no marathis..no North Indian or south Indian feeling is coming in our way. This is the speciality of this country which holds us together since years. People like Thackereys who boast to be braves were not seen safeguarding the city which they claim to be their own property. Now they should stop these hatred games and do little meaningful in this hour of need.

Excellent Work NSG/CAT - Provide more tools to them by Aditya on 29 Nov 2008

Excellent Job Done. But I think we need to provide more modern weapons and tools to this force to fight anti-terrorism such as night googles, Chemical bombs that knock people unconscious, small robots with remote control to go around the corners, also small robots with guns that can be controlled remotely, very small airplanes that can be remotely controlled for photography, best armor. I would like this team to all all the gadgets that are seen in a spy movie that they are so precise and deadly that terrorist tremble hearing that NSG/CAT are coming. If there are no funding look at very innovative methods such as charging for services to the airlines for Air Marshals, Five Star hotels, Foreign Embassies, Large private businesses such as Tata, Reliance etc providing security as these sites are definitely will be on the terrorist list and they need their services. Commandos should be rotated through various roles so that they get required training without getting ruste

We never learn by Jay on 29 Nov 2008

No one will remember these heroes who laid their lives to fight these Islamic terrorism once all the dusts are settled. Politicians will continue to sell the country; the show will go on as usual. What happened to those “heroes” who earlier laid their lives during so many anti-terrorists efforts? What happened to those army personnel who died during three wars with Pakistan? Did those incidents taught our political leadership to become more honest, more patriotic? NO. The only people who will remember those fallen heroes are their family members who will then struggle to meet their ends meet.

Fallen Heroes by Arun on 29 Nov 2008

Our condolences to the families of these heroes. Our hearts are bleeding. They are in our prayers. The MNS and Raj Thackerays should fall on the feet of the family members of such Non-mumbaikars and clean their slippers for life. Anyways, where are they now? At peacetime they want attention so they create a crisis, At a time of real crisis they disapper? Good - they have the prerequisites for becoming a major star in Indian politics. Do these MNS people even vaguely realize they tried to rip out the national fabric of the country, the same fabric that these heroes gave their life to save? Not to mention the "Marathis" in Mumbai these non-marathi heroes tried to save?

Salute by Vishnu on 29 Nov 2008
