Kolkata, March 12 The Kolkata police arrested a doctor of the Charnock Hospital in New Town for allegedly molesting a female patient who was admitted in the hospital’s ICU ward.

According to the police, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Sandip Das was arrested in the wee hours on Wednesday following a complaint filed by the patient’s husband, Amlan Biswas.

In his complaint, Biswas has alleged that Das molested his wife while on duty on Tuesday, a day after she was admitted to the hospital. Biswas said that on Tuesday, she was scared of people and was not saying anything to him.

After several attempts, his wife communicated him and narrated the event through a writing at around 6.00 pm on Tuesday. “When I brought the issue to the notice of the hospital authorities, they asked me to settle the matter. I complained to the police following which Das was arrested. At the police station, Das threatened me with dire consequences as well,” Biswas added.

After Biswas left the hospital with his wife on Tuesday evening, a large number of Forward Bloc cadres surrounded the hospital and demanded the hospital authorities to shut down the facility. Biswas said that he had some friends in the Bloc, who came out in his support.

The managing director, tSK Misra, however, said Das was a trusted employee and had been with the hospital since its inception. “If there’s any truth in the complaint, we’ll take steps. We’ve begun an inquiry. The doctor will continue to work till proven guilty. We’re arranging for his bail,” he said.
