Kathmandu, May 31: Maoist chairman Prachanda, expected to lead the next government in Nepal, has warned the media against critising his party, saying that "we will no longer tolerate criticism as we have already been elected by the people."

Addressing a rally to celebrate the declaration of republic in Kathmandu Prachanda said his CPN-Maoist will not tolerate further criticism by the media and warned of serious consequences if it continued to criticise the party.

Targeting the Kantipur publication that brings out the largest circulated dailies Kantipur and The Kathmandu Post, the former rebel leader said, "You journalists did well to continuously criticise the Maoists before the constituent assembly polls, otherwise the election would not have taken place at all."

"Now we will no longer tolerate criticism as we have already been elected by the people," he said, adding that the other newspapers criticising the Maoist will also meet the same fate.

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) has flayed Prachanda's statement describing it as remarks directed against the freedom of the press.

"This has raised suspicion in the Maoists' commitment towards a free press," FNJ president Dharmendra Jha said in a statement. FNJ also asked the Maoists to demonstrate their commitment to a free press in the country by making their party's policy towards press freedom public.

The Maoists have emerged as the largest party in the 601-member constituent assembly with no one getting clear majority. The deadlock among the political parties has caused delay in the formation of the coalition government.

Maoist warning by Mohan on 06 Jun 2008

I condemn the statement by Prachanda. If the maoists have been elected by the people, they can also be rejected by the people. The Maoists are not above critcism or scrutiny merely because they have been elected to power. Prachanda would do well to learn from history or he will create another dictatorial regime in Nepal.

Nepal will be an extension of China in the days and months to come. It's poerful neighbour will pump in material and ideology and don't be surprised if the constitution is vetted and approved by them. Already they are talking of revising their fiendship treaty and river water sharing etc with India. All these policies will be dictated by its owerful neighbour whom they can not antogonise. Time will tell whether it will go the way Tibet went. The next big war they say will be for water. China is smacking its lips and will celebrate in 2012 , their 50th anniversary of humiliating India. They will have our other neighbours as partners in these celeberations.

COMEDY!: by John Connor on 01 Jun 2008

It was OK for the Maosit to rampage across Nepal paralysing ecnomy. Now it is not OK if they start terrorisng the country just because they have been elected!Surely this guys do not know that in a democracy you work for the people the way people want not the way the party wants. Secondly if you do not perform you can be sacked at any time.

power change in Nepal by ashokakumarjha on 31 May 2008

Comminist Governmentcan never tolerate a free press like dictator. Infact cominist government is a government of criminals in the guise of an ideology.Allthou marxism has failed but to keep theirs criminalasim and power live these people are carring the mumy of marxism. even China is not govern by true comminists. the so called progressive, broad minded secular inttelectuals of india, alongwith comminists has helped them immenslyin coming in the power, but it will surel proove disastrous for india. It is tottally incorrect and a lies that people has elected them, infact with the help and coperation of Nepali police and army they have been elected. this is the hard fact and ground realities of Nepali election.

power change in Nepal by Garg on 01 Jun 2008

I agree. This is all just mob politics. The days of standing on ones own are gone. Numbers matter now - hiding and fighting from under the skirt of groups is what happens now. What I am concerned about is the spreading communism in India itself. We will lose our freedom, our freedom of expression, freedom of speech, freedom of religion (hindus and muslims and all others), freedom to elect and change governments, right to information. Why is it that fundamental communism is not seen as a threat to democracy in our constitution?

Taste of things to come by Nitin Pandey on 31 May 2008

This is just the taste of things to come. We just have to wait till he gets power in his hand, then the real "democracy" will show up. The "prasads" for India, which has been instrumental in his coming to power, will also be given soon.
